Light under the cabinet door

In a letter to the team, Tom Levitt, MP for High Peak, indicates that the campaign to identify a single cabinet minister responsible for mountain rescue, has moved on slightly.

Currently the activities of mountain rescue teams fall into several different ministerial portfolios which makes highlighting any single issue very difficult.  Tom has been leading a campaign to bring all the varied roles under the wing of a single Cabinet Minister to lead on all issues raised or involving the voluntary mountain rescue teams.

A copied letter from Rt Hon. David Mason MP, Minister …

Clocks change – a timely reminder!

At 02.00 hours on Sunday 25th October British Summer Time ends and the clocks go back one hour.

Over the last few years there has been an increasing trend for rescue team call-outs to suddenly rise in October and November as the short daylight hours catch people out on the hills.  On Sunday the sun will set at 16.46 hours which will probably catch some people still up on the moors and unprepared as darkness falls.   With the proliferation of mobile phones it is too easy to rely on summoning assistance from mountain …

Pass the salt, please

When wood turning craftsman, Peter Topliss, offered to raise a few bob at a craft-show other stall holders were keen to support his enthusiasm.  Peter organised a raffle at the show which was held at the Palace Hotel in Buxton last Sunday.

Peter generously offered his handmade salt and pepper mills with matching serviette rings as the prize. He raised £43 from visitors to the small craft exhibition in the ornate surroundings of the five star hotel.

Spontaneous offers of this nature to help the team are really appreciated.  We are amazed at the trouble that …

Nice day for a call-out

Climbing on the Roaches is usually reserved for warm sunny days or tranquil evenings but a call-out on Tuesday 6th October proved to be a little damp.

This call was to assist a 34 year old walker who had sustained a broken leg near Doxey’s Pool on the the Roaches ridge.  The wind and rain prevented an air-ambulance from providing its usual assistance so the team were left to carry the casualty in the old fashioned way.

The images below were captured by ambulance personnel at the scene and were forwarded to the team later, together with some kind comments on the work …

Sheila Heywood, 1924-2009

It is with great sadness that the team has learnt of the death of Sheila Heywood on 3rd August 2009, aged 84.

Sheila was a long time supporter of the team and generously gave time and financial assistance over the past twenty years.  Her first contact with the rescue team was in October 1989 when she became a surprise guest at Buxton Mountain Rescue Team’s annual dinner dance.  None of the members knew who she was until she stood up after the rest of after dinner speeches had concluded.   Sheila then presented a cheque for £20,000 …

Fundraiser conquers Mount Kenya

Debbie Marsden from Ashbourne successfully completed an amazing trip to the top of Mount Kenya in September to raise money for the team. Mount Kenya, at 4985 metres, is the second highest mountain in Africa after Kilimanjaro. Not only did Debbie reach the summit but, she also exceeded her fundraising target.

Debbie admits to not being a true mountaineer preferring scuba diving to climbing but the opportunity to scale Mount Kenya was too good to miss. The expedition took five days and Debbie relates her own story below.

MPs’ support for High Peak rescue teams

When three local Members of Parliament got lost on Kinder in July, the four mountain rescue teams in the High Peak area were called out.

The exercise was all about raising awareness in Westminster about the work that volunteer mountain rescue teams do.  High Peak MP, Tom Levitt, with two of his neighbouring colleagues, Charlotte Atkins MP and Angela Smith MP, were game to volunteer for the multi-team search exercise.  Whilst the exercise provided practical search management experience for the four teams …
