At the biannual meeting of Mountain Rescue England & Wales on Saturday 21st November Buxton Team Chairman, Ian Hurst, was presented with a Distinguished Service Certificate.

Ian Hurst has been involved with mountain rescue for over 46 years and played a significant part in forming the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation in 1964.

Pictorial support

For a charitable organisation totally dependent gifts and donations the help of local companies is very important.  And its not just cash that has its value.

RAF curfew for Valley and Leconfield

The RAF Search and Rescue service from two stations which normally cover the Peak District will be suspended during the hours of darkness according to a recent BBC news item.

In proposals to temporarily curtail the service, six stations may be down-graded to daylight cover only, starting from the 15th November. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said the changes were only temporary and that full cover should be reinstated by 31st December.

Band drums up support

On Wednesday night team Chairman, Ian Hurst, and team member, Peter Farrer, attended a presentation evening at which three allied charities received £350 each.

The donations totalling £1,050 were made from money raised by Burbage Brass Band at a charity concert at the Palace Hotel on Friday 2nd October.  The other charities to benefit were Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation, and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air-ambulance.

Rockets fired at Dove Holes!

The 5th of November!  Bonfire night and all are welcome to the Dove Holes Community Association annual event.

The whole village turns out on this night so it pays to be early.  Gates open and the bonfire is lit at 7.00 pm with the firework display starting at 7.30 pm.   It’s a community event at which the team has been involved for over ten years and always goes with a bang!

It’s a load of old rope!

 As part of its ongoing renewal programme to ensure that all the crag rescue equipment is in tip top condition, Buxton Mountain Rescue Team has just spent over £400 on new rope and tape slings. 

Replacing crag equipment is a rolling process so that renewing used or time expired rope does not all have to be done at the same time.  Whilst some of the rescue equipment comes courtesy of Mountain Rescue (England & Wales), the central supplies are not sufficient for all the team’s needs and local purchases are necessary.

The world’s fastest chocolatier?

Next Wednesday, Steve Lee flies out to America to take on the 26 mile New York Marathon.

Steve is the proprietor of Charlotte’s Chcocolates in Buxton and hopes to raise a lot money for the team on his marathon trip.   The race is on Sunday 1st November so he wont have too long to settle in and acclimatise, but he is confident his training will prove dividends.
