Thanks for 2009

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team would like to say a huge Thank You to all those who supported the team during 2009.  It is only with such wonderful local support that the team can continue to help those who become distressed or injured in the hills and dales of the Peak District.

In 2009 team members responded to eight-seven requests for assistance from the police and ambulance services around the area. Call-outs were predominately to help injured walkers and climbers, but also included providing assistance to the wider local community with slips and falls in the town’s country parks.  Pets and sheep stranded …

How tight is your girdle?

The team has always tried to keep pace with modern developments in patient care. Our policy is to offer the very best available to any casualty we’re called to treat.  Thanks to Chapel Ramblers and your donations the team has been able to invest £300 in a new system of splinting for pelvic injuries.

We often only think of splints for legs and arms but any fractured bone needs to be secured to prevent further damage to blood vessels and internal organs.   The pelvis is a major structural part of the skeleton but …

Hoax callers say, “Sorry, it was stupid.”

On 13th August 2009 three search & rescue dogs, Derby Mountain Rescue Team and Buxton Mountain Rescue Team were all called to woodland on the outskirts of Leek in Staffordshire.  The police had received a 999 call stating that two boys had fallen into a large hole and could not escape.

However as the incident was progressing further police enquiries proved the call to have …

Team sounds warning to lost ramblers

Strangely, when people get lost on the Peak District moors they always seem to do it in bad weather and darkness!  So trying to find people who have huddled under a wall or boulder to seek shelter is a slow and laborious business.

Good walking books recommend carrying a torch and whistle all year round. They can be used to attract the attention of a searching group when an emergency occurs.  However, those that have the sense to be prepared for such moments probably also have more sense than to get lost in the first place! So, …

Boxing Day comes early for Tom!

This year sets a new record for income raised by our little red counter-top collection boxes. The team now relies on the boxes for over 10% of its annual income. It may seem surprising that at a time of general financial recession, income from the boxes has grown.

However, this is no accident. The steady year by year growth is down to three factors: the continued generosity of local people wishing to help a local charity; generous shop keepers giving up profitable counter space; and a small team of dedicated members focusing …
