10 year old James Martin pulls on his boots again.

Not content with raising £500 for the team by walking the Coast to Coast in July last year, young James Martin is pushing Mum and brother Josh towards another long distance walk.
This time a mere 85 miles along the Dales Way from Ilkley in in the Yorkshire Dales National Park to Windermere in the Lake District.   The 4 1/2 day treck is planned for August and will be James’s fourth long distance walk.

Charity income drops 16%

In an annual report to the committee of trustees of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team, the Honorary Treasurer reported that during 2009, income in real terms had dropped by over £12,000 from 2008 figures.

However, local support was still buoyant with numerous small clubs and societies raising money for the team. The Treasurer said “The team is becoming more reliant on the generosity of local people as income from the bigger charitable trusts and foundations is falling in these times of recession.” 

Team members themselves continue to work hard to raise money by committing increasing …

Each year the staff at Buxton’s Lime Tree Caravan & Camp Site select two charities to benefit from their fundraising efforts throughout the year.  This year, after site managers learnt about the team’s activities in the local press, they have selected Buxton Mountain Rescue Team. 

Small events throughout the year will help raise cash supported particularly from the sale of second-hand books. As Buxton is renowned for its good summer weather, sales to campers and caravanners should be high as they relax in the glorious sunshine which is just around the corner!

MP calls for winter cash-aid for mountain rescue

Following the prolonged snow and ice across the Peak District and Britain as a whole, High Peak MP Tom Levitt has asked the Government to recognise the extra effort made by Mountain Rescue volunteers. The service, which receives no direct government funding in England, was called on many times both locally and elsewhere to assist the ‘traditional’ emergency services carry out their rescue duties.
In a letter to Police minister David Hanson on behalf of a constituent, Mr Levitt says:

Zak, top dog, makes top grade

Nick Smith, a member of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team, with his trusty search dog Zak, has made the coveted grade of “Operational Search Dog” with flying colours in a recent assessment. Their outstanding performance also won them a special trophy not awarded to any other dog unit since 2001.

Snow joke

Being a member of a mountain rescue team is supposed to be about mountaineers helping other mountaineers who get into trouble in the hills.  But in the last couple of weeks mountain rescue has taken the guise of ambulance service and a vehicle recovery organisation.

From Monday 11th January, the Abbey re-brands as SANTADER and to mark the occasion the building society is kindly offering support to one of three local charities.
