Building bridges with other organisations

Well, not actually a bridge but a boardwalk!   

Acting on a request from Derbyshire Wildlife Trust several team members were keen to volunteer and join in with Kinder MRT members and other helpers to install a new section of broadwalk in Chee Dale.   The timber boardwalk will protect riverside plants from being trampled underfoot and helps walkers to keep their feet dry.    All the necessary materials had to be lowered from one of the old railway bridges on the Monsal Trail and then floated about a quarter of a mile down river.

On parade

Some boot polish was in order last week when Buxton Mountain Rescue called in at the local Army Cadet Force to give a talk. Team member, Jon Kidd, along with trainees, Rob Stordy, and Alan Ball (who also happens to be a Sergeant Major Instructor in the Army Cadet Force) visited Chapel-en-le-Frith Detachment, A Company, Derbyshire Cadet Battalion, The Mercian Regiment.

Leek to Buxton, a long walk for a pint!

As an accountant, 44 year old Adrian Paddock is used to counting money but now he is trying to raise as much as possible for the rescue team.

Adrian sets himself a challenge in aid of charity every year. This year he has generously chosen Buxton MRT to benefit.  Adrian, from Cheadle, Staffs, is planning to walk from Leek to Buxton on Saturday 30th April and is looking for as many sponsors as possible.  The sixteen mile route will take him past Tittesworth Reservoir, over the Roaches to Luds Church, onto Three Shires Head, …

One man and his search dog retire

After 31 years in mountain rescue, Malc Bowyer who lives in Buxworth is hanging up his operational boots.   Malc joined the Buxton Team in 1979, he served as the teams equipment officer for some years, before acquiring his first search and rescue dog Glyn.   Both he and Glyn were graded by the Search and Rescue Dog Association in 1991 and became a fully operational search dog and handler.   Malc then was being called to missing people searches not just in the Peak District but elsewhere in mainland UK, including the Lockerbie …

Citizenship raises £1,215.

Two young men from a school in Dunstable, Bedfordshire have just raised a staggering £1,215 with a sponsored cycle ride.  

The event was part of coursework in Citizenship for GCSE.  (news article 15/11/10)   The coursework involved researching an organisation and then preparing a presentation to their peers.  Another aspect was to attempt to raise money for the charity and the lads embarked on planning a sponsored cycle ride through the Peak District.

Strike up the band. Saturday 9th April

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team is honoured to have been chosen to benefit from a Charity concert to be given by one of the area’s premier brass bands.

Derwent Brass is an award winning band with a repertoire including everything from overtures and big band sounds to hymns and Broadway hits. And of course the band’s own prize winning tradditional brass music. The evening concert, in the ambiance of the Landau Forte Theatre, Derby, promises to be a sensational night for all ages and is bound to attract in a large audiance.

Classic car club jack-up support

Now we know our response vehicles are really getting old!  So much so that they have stimulated interest from the Hare & Hounds Classic Vehicle Club.

The H & H CVC was founded in 1991 for anyone interested in early classic cars, but has now grown to include classic motorcycles, light-commercial, and even modern classic vehicles. 

Each year the club runs a special event known as the Peaks & Dales which is a rally starting in Marple and finishing at the Pavilion Gardens, in Buxton. The event raises money for charity and this year the …

Medical Centre Christmas Cracker

A Christmas raffle held by staff at Bakewell Medical Centre has raised a magnificent £278. 

Each year the staff choose a different charity to support with a raffle run over the Christmas period.  For 2010 Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was chosen and the results is a big boost to the team’s funds.

The team sends a huge “Thank You” to the staff of the medical centre on Butts Road, Bakewell and to all the many people who contributed to the donation by buying tickets.   The rescue team is totally dependent on this sort of support without which it …
