Transferrable skills

There was a road crash on the A34 near Macclesfield last Monday night. Richard Doran, the Team Secretary, happened to be the first person with First Aid knowledge to arrive at the roadside scene. Along with a retired Fireman, Richard took control of caring for the driver who was lying injured at the side of the road. The vehicle had clearly rolled and was somewhat “flatter” than before the incident.

After carrying out a quick, airway, breathing, circulation, and consciousness check, and mindful of the cold, the casualty was reassured, immobilised, and checked for injuries. Initial diagnosis revealed lower …

Christmas Quiz Results

Thanks to the marvelous help of team supporter, Gillian Halliday of Lincolnshire, the rescue team is £85 better off.

Gillian devised a very clever quiz using place names which included the name of a bird.   Entries came from far and wide but the winners of the two cash prizes were Mrs McCallun and Mrs Parkes who have been notified.

Thanks to everyone who took part and sent in  a donation.  If you missed out on this one Gill will be writing another quiz to be released in September.  Watch this space.

Another example of the fantastic support the team receives.  Anyone else with great …

Just like buses!

After a lengthy spell of several weeks without a significant call-out the team was asked to respond twice in twenty-four hours.  It was mid-November when the team last had to walk more than a few hundred yards to a casualty so some of the team were beginning to get twitchy.

However after two call-outs over a very wet weekend, those members were wishing the incident drought had continued.  The team base is now strewn with muddy wet equipment waiting for replenishment and inspection before it can go back into service.

However, thanks to the …

2011 is off the ground

Fifteen members of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team visited RAF Leconfield on Yorkshire’s east coast for training with the Search and Rescue Sea King helicopters.

Visiting the RAF base was of great benefit as it gave the team ample time to inspect the machines whilst they were in the hanger, protected from the weather.  Training normally takes place on exercise in the Peak District but the adrenaline, noise and being under the strict direction of the aircrew does not give the best introduction to such a fascinating machine.

Team members also got an an insight into …

Team member goes over the wall

After over ten years as an operational member of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team, Fiona Thompson said, “Goodbye” at the team’s last training night. Fiona’s husband has a new job in Newcastle and the couple, with their two young children, are moving north to Hadrian’s Wall.

Whilst sad to be leaving the move brings new challenges, not least moving house in a snowstorm. Fiona has already made contact with Northumbria National Park Mountain Rescue Team and hopes to be able to join its members on an exercise before the new year. However, Northumbria currently lies under even deeper snow …

Training for the worst

08.30 hours.  It was a dull, cold November morning when the Peak District Duty Incident Controller contacted the team with the even more chilling message, “Male, mid-fifties,  suspected heart attack at Crowden Towers.”

08.32 hours.  Team Call-out officer rudely awakened from a Sunday lie-in.  “Full team call-out now, RV at Tipps car park.  I want both vehicles and try and get me a Doctor asap. This might not have a happy ending.”   The tone of the team leader’s voice said a thousand words in one short sentence.

08.33 hours.  Forty radio-pagers stutter …
