Man falls 14,000 feet at 120 miles per hour!

What a way to celebrate the big 50!   John Molyneux, from Sale, is all set to jump out of an aircraft flying at 14,000 feet to raise money for Buxton Mountain Rescue Team as part of his big birthday celebrations.  John, who has never jumped before, will free fall 9,000 feet at speeds up to 120 miles per hour before, (he hopes), his tandem Sky Dive Instructor pulls the cord to gently lower them both another 5,000 feet back to earth.

Government say “NO” to VAT changes!

Despite over 6,500 people signing up to the national petition sent to 10 Downing Street in May, the government has refued to budge on the VAT issue. The official response to the petition was published today (Friday) and emailed to every signatory.

Mountain rescue teams nationally have highlighted the case for zero rated value added tax for all its purchases – see team news items on this site 5th & 29th of March – arguing that the only income they have is through charitable donations.   Whilst it is true that some items of …

It’s a long walk for young legs!

Starts Wednesday 22nd July !
Nine year old James Martin from Poynton in Cheshire is all set to take on 190 miles of the rugged Coast to Coast in July and all to raise money for Buxton Mountain Rescue Team!

James is no stranger to big hills and long walks having already conquered Ben Nevis, Ben Lomond, Skiddaw, Helvellyn by Striding Edge and all the Langdale peaks to mention just a few.  In 2007 he completed the West Highland Way and in 2008 mastered the Cumbrian Way.

The Coast to Coast will be his longest walk so far …

Emegency Services Day success

Sunday 14th June saw the gathering of every arm of the emergency services available in the Peak District at a gala exhibition and display at Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens.

The bright sunshine attracted thousands to the show which was free for all see.  Police, fire and ambulance were there in force as were the lesser known and mostly voluntary organisations such as cave rescue, first responders, British Red Cross and St John Ambulance,  the Peak District National Park wardens moorlands fire unit and the Search & Rescue Dog Association.  Buxton Mountain Rescue Team …

Know your chopper: part one

Regular readers may have noticed that an increasing number of call-outs now involve the use of an air-ambulance.  The speed and manoeuverability of these aircraft has made a dramatic difference to the time in which a casualty can receive treatment and be transported to hospital care.   In years gone by it was only the severest of  injuries which would justify the calling of a helicopter and that would mean bringing a RAF search & rescue helicopter from Leconfield in North Yorkshire.

Ladies of Kettleshulme put money in the hat

Kettlehulme Womens’ Institute visted the rescue team’s base at Dove Holes on Tuesday night and kick-started a funding appeal to raise £3,000 to buy a safety helmet form every operational member. 

The ladies most generously donated £400 to the team following a talk and visual display by team leader, Neil Carruthers, on the work of the rescue team.   Kettleshulme Womens’ Institute, a member of the Cheshire Federation of  Womens’ Institutes, has worked hard to raise the money in the small village situated just round the corner from the popular climbing edge, Windgather Rocks….

Ramblers annual help totals £1,000

Many mountain rescue teams depend on outdoor clubs and societies to help with the financial burden of running the voluntary service – and non more so than the Buxton team.   The team is always grateful for the numerous donations it receives from rambling groups and climbing clubs.  The donations are often individually quite small sums raised at a special event or the surplus of an annual membership subscription, but when added together over the years they form the backbone of funding for the team.

The 12th Annual Emergency Services Day will be held on Sunday 14th June at Pavilion Gardens, Buxton between 10.30 am & 4.15pm.

It doesn’t matter how old or young you are this day has something for everyone – and its FREE!   Supported by all the blue light emergency services, the day is full of action and excitement with spontaneous fires breaking out, head on traffic collisions, rescues from high buildings, rescues from deep underground caverns and of course, dramatic rescues from cliff faces!   There is also an opportunity to be licked into submission …
