We send a huge “Thank You” to Gill for all the trouble she goes to in creating and circulating the quizzes.   Gill now lives in Lincolnshire saying …

Beyond the call of duty

Whilst returning home from work in Ashbourne, one of our trainees, Shelley Smith, came across a road traffic accident at Fenny Bentley. The head on collision involved a family of three from the Stafford area.

On arriving at the scene all the occupants, mum, dad and daughter Claire were out of the car. The driver of the second vehicle was uninjured.

The father, was already being attended to by another first aider who had witnessed the crash. Following a brief discussion with him Shelley provided a sleeping bag and pillow to keep the father warm and comfortable on the road.

Derby University’s Outdoor Leadership Centre at Oaklands Manor on Long Hill, Buxton, was recently opened. The Centre aims to provide degree level courses in countryside management, estate management and outdoor adventure leadership.  The new facilities are of a world class standard permitting a controlled learning environment very close to the university campus in Buxton. Friends in high places

When not doing outdoor instruction work in the Peak District, Buxton Mountain Rescue Team member, Rob Wymer, a qualified UIMLA International Mountain Leader, takes on overseas trekking and mountaineering expeditions for adults and young people.

Rob was leading a group on a trekking holiday covering part of the Annapurna Circuit in western Nepal, when he met Dorje, who had been assigned to him as a Sirdar – the person in charge of all the sherpas and porters, and all local matters.

Peak District Peat – don’t get stuck

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team wishes to warn hill walkers about the dangers of peat bogs on the high moorlands.

During the last six weeks we are aware of three incidents involving hill walkers trapped in peat bogs. The latest occurred on Saturday as one of our members was walking between Rushop Edge and Brown Knoll. An elderly gentleman walked into a bog and was soon up to his waist in the brown sticky, stinking, glue like peat bog. He managed to extricate himself, and although very wet and dirty, was fortunately otherwise unharmed. An additional concern at this time of …

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team has just invested over £2,500 getting its three response vehicles ready for winter. In recent years call-outs in severe snow conditions have increased, prompting the team to equip each of its three response vehicles with winter tyres. The tyres for the team’s two Transit vehicles were supplied by GK Ford of Chesterfield whilst local dealer, Steve’s Tyres of Dale Road, Buxton, supplied the rugged terrain tyres for the team’s Land Rover.

Team Chairman, Roger Bennett, said:
The teams trustees decided that ensuring our vehicles …

Puppy love

There are many dog admirers and owners in the team, but it takes a particular keeness and commitment to become a SARDA dog handler. Buxton MRT are already lucky to have two operational dog teams, and are pleased that there may be a third lined up for training.

Team member, Andy Keen aspires to be a handler. He’s witnessed first-hand how satisfying it is for other handlers to help save lives, and is fully aware of the long process and expense that this entails: typically, up to 3 years to get a dog to junior operational level, with a further …

Sharing the love

Just married couple, one of whom was a team doctor, recently raised c.£350 for Buxton Mountain Rescue as part of their wedding celebrations.

Instead of asking for gifts, Mike Jepson and his wife, Helen, hosted a ceilidh and asked guests at the event to donate to the team instead. Lovely couple, lovely gesture. We’re immensely grateful.

Mike has been an operational member of the team for about two years. His day job was an anaesthetist in a Manchester hospital, and on top of the usual team commitments, he was also active in delivering First Aid and Casualty Care training to his …

Macclesfield gives magnificently

Fundraising is an essential facet of life for members of mountain rescue teams. It is necessary to keep their services going. Organised street collections is one of the ways we achieve this, and on Sat. 7th Jul. Buxton MRT were in the market place of Macclesfield, a town whose surrounding countryside is part of our operational area.

True to form, the Macclesfield public were keenly interested in the work of mountain rescue operating in their neighbourhood. They chatted readily to the team members present, and took the opportunity for a close inspection of the specialist kit and vehicle we had with …
