Team Members To Walk In Memory of Three Young Men

The early hours of Saturday 5th April 2014 will see 11 Buxton Team members heading for Holmbridge, West Yorkshire to take part in the annual Four Inns Walk.  This is a competitive event, testing stamina and navigational ability organised by the Derbyshire Scouts Council, covering some 65 kilometres of the roughest and toughest moorlands in the Peak District. The walk takes its name from the four pubs, the Isle of Skye (now demolished), Snake Inn, Snake Pass, Nags Head, Edale and the Cat and Fiddle near Buxton, finishing at Buxton Community School.

Buffaloes Boost Appeal

The Buffaloes, Cheshire Cheese Lodge, Buxton has been raising money throughout 2013 to support Buxton Mountain Rescue Team. Their fundraising activities have included quiz nights, a car-boot sale and a fun day in Buxton.  At the Lodge’s Annual Dinner at the Old Hall Hotel last Saturday a grand cheque for £2,644 was presented to the team.   Keith Birkit BEM who attended the dinner on behalf of the team to receive the cheque said, ” This is a fantastic donation which represents a year of hard work by just a small …

Chinley Drop In – drop in a big one!

The Team’s “£50,000 for Fifty Years Service Appeal” received a surprise boost on Friday when a donation of £220 was presented to Team Chairman, Roger Bennett by Chinley Drop In.

Chinley Drop In is a group which meets each Wednesday and Friday morning at The Parish Rooms in Chinley.   They are there to provide information about the parish to anyone who wants to just “drop in” and ask a question.  However the group has grown and now provides a valued meeting meeting place for all the residents of the village.  Tea …

Team President meets H.M. The Queen

Buxton Team President, Ian Hurst, was invited to Buckingham Palace to receive the award of MBE.

This was announced in HM The Queens Birthday Honours in June 2013 for “Services to Mountain Rescue in Derbyshire”. The investiture was held by The Queen, in the magnificent palace ballroom, with the band of the Household Division playing in the gallery throughout.

£50,000 For 50 Years of Service Campaign gets its first contribution.

2014 is Buxton Mountain Rescue Team’s Golden Anniversary and marks the start of a major fund raising campaign to replace the team’s Incident Control Vehicle which, after eleven years of loyal service, is now due for retirement.

And only a few days into the New Year the,”£50,000 for Fifty Years  Service Fund”  has already received its first contribution.  The donation of £65 was raised by the parishioners of St James’ Taxal at a concert in the church when parishioners were entertained by a Barbershop Harmony Chorus.

Ken Drabble

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was saddened last weekend by the report of the death of Ken Drabble.  

Ken was the Head Warden for the Peak District National Park Planning Board at a time when the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation was in its early stages of development.  He soon became an Incident Controller after joining the Warden service and played a very active part in many rescues.   At that time, reports of daytime rescue incidents were diverted by the police to the National Park Information Centre at Edale where Ken …

Team supporter, Gillian Halliday’s series of word quizzes continue to reap handsome rewards for the rescue team.  Quiz 6, looking for British place names containing items found around the home, received 188 £1 entries with an additional £44 raised in donations.

Winners are:  1st Prize £10 to Mrs V Piper of Poole, Dorset and 2nd prize £5 to Mrs M Rance of Lincoln.  Prizes are on their way. Congratulations to the winners and many thanks to everyone who supported the quiz.
