Search Dog Call Outs

Hayfield

Search Dog, Megan, and her handler, were called to assist Kinder MRT who were looking for a group of 4 benighted walkers on the hill in poor weather conditions and fading light.

The group consisted of 2 adults, and two young people, who were extremely cold and concerned about the onset of hypothermia. A foot section had been deployed to a grid reference obtained through SARLOC, but the dog team was summoned to stand-by, if required.

The group was located and escorted safely off the hill. The dog unit was stood down.

Kinder Plateau

Search Dog, Megan, and her handler Dave Mason, were requested to assist Kinder MRT who were trying to locate a lost party after dark on Kinder Scout.

On arrival at the RV, the team leader had managed to speak with the party and gained a location for them using SARLOC. Foot sections were deployed, and SARDA were kept on stand-by until these sections actually met up with the lost group.

At this point the dog units were stood down.

Goyt Valley

Search Dog, Megan, and her handler were called to assist the police search the Goyt Valley for a missing person.

This was a large scale search carried out over two days at the weekend, and involved several Mountain Rescue Teams, with water units, plus Search Dogs from various parts of the country. Please see post for team call-out on same dates.

Burbage Moor

Search dogs requested to assist Edale MRT search for a vulnerable female on Burbage Moor.

They were stood down en-route when the missing person was located by a police unit on an adjacent road.

Ullswater, Lake District

Whilst attending a national search dog training course in the Lake District, dog support was requested by Patterdale MRT to search mountain and woodland areas surrounding Ullswater for a despondent male.

The search was stood down when police divers recovered a body matching the description of the missing person from the lake.

Burbage valley

Search dog Megan and handler called to assist Edale MRT and a Sea King helicopter from RAF Leconfield to search the Burbage Valley near Higgar Tor.

The search was organised following the discovery of discarded clothing, sleeping items, and a pet dog running free in the location.

The search was stood down when all local areas had been covered.

Tamworth area

Search dog support was requested by Staffordshire SART in woodland near Tamworth. Zak and his handler responded. They were looking for a missing despondent female.

Nothing was found in the search area, and police enquiries continue.

Machynlleth, S. Wales

Over the period of Friday the 5th of October to Sunday the 7th October 2012, team search dogs, Megan and Zak, along with their handlers, assisted local mountain rescue teams with the search for missing 5 year old, April Jones, in South Wales.

The dog units worked tirelessly to search demanding areas of forestry and mountain side.

Unfortunately April was not located. Both dog handlers were touched by the welcoming community who not only supplied endless amounts of food to the MRT members, but also provided accommodation. Their thoughts remain with Aprils parents.

East Bridgeford, Nottinghamshire

Search Dog Zak, and his handler, were called to assist Derby Mountain Rescue team for a missing person.

The woman, a 86 year old, had been missing from her home for two days at this point. She was eventually found by a hedgerow in a field, outside of the search dog’s area, and was taken to Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham for attention.
