"Most Senior Casualty" a new record?

It was in the afternoon of Wednesday 25th June when the Buxton and Edale Joint Team Snatch Squad was called to the Limestone Way at Cales Dale.  A walker, part of a large rambling group, had slipped and sustained very nasty upper arm and shoulder injuries.  Access to this particular part of the Limestone Way is steep and narrow which made the stretcher evacuation quite difficult.  However, within an hour our casualty was treated, offered pain relief and carried up to the ambulance which was waiting at One Ash Grange Farm.  The casualty was taken initially to Chesterfield Royal Hospital and …

Casualty says, “You never know when you may need them.”

On Sunday 22nd September 2008 the team was called to an incident in the Dane Valley at Wincle near Macclesfield.  The casualty was a local woman who was out walking with her partner when she slipped, severely breaking her ankle.  Treatment was administered on site by a Cheshire Ambulance Service crew and team firsts-aiders before she was carried by stretcher to the nearest farm track and a waiting ambulance.  From a team perspective this was a simple and routine call-out with the incident site not too far from the road and in pleasant weather.  For the casualty it would mean painful surgery followed by 6 …

Couple say, “I do.” and then ask their guests to do it as well!

Late in the afternoon of Sunday 25th November 2007, the volunteers of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team were called to a narrow steep track in Cumberland Clough which runs from near the Cat and Fiddle at Buxton down into Wildboar Clough. A mountain biker had crashed whilst descending the track and had impaled himself on the cycle. A Cheshire ambulance crew and rescue team first-aiders treated the casualty, Mike Whiteside from Sheffield, on site before he was carefully carried by stretcher to Clough House Farm where he was transferred to an air-ambulance.

That evening Mike Whiteside underwent emergency surgery in hospital but …

Lloyds TSB recognise dedication

The Lloyds TSB Foundation has established a “matched giving” scheme to encourage members of staff from Lloyds TSB Group to get involved in the charity / volunteer sector.

This year The Foundation has donated £500 to the team in recognition of over 100 hours of voluntary work by team member Terry Doyle.  Terry in fact has volunteered many more than 100 hours of work as a regular operational call-out member and as the team’s Communications Officer.

With no national fundraisers, no government grant and no central pot of money to call on, the team is entirely dependent on donations of this sort.  Thank-you Lloyds TSB.

Country Fair – record fundraiser

BMRT says a big thank-you to all those who worked at, contributed to, donated or in any way helped make the 2008 Chatsworth Country Fair a record fundraising success.

The three day fair held in late September each year in the grounds of Derbyshire’s magnificent Chatsworth House attracts tens of thousands of visitors.  The rescue team has for many years been fortunate enough to have permission to raise money at the show in return for selling official programmes at the gate.  This year, despite the damp weather and two call-outs, the team raised a record amount which will help the volunteers maintain the …

Buxton Mountain rescue has a mystery supporter. She is planning on doing the BUPA Great North Run, coming up on 5th October. This is the world’s biggest and most prestigious half-marathon (13.1 miles), based in Newcastle.

The reason, in her own words is:
‘I have many happy memories of hiking, camping and climbing in the Peak District, and so far so good – I haven’t been one of the 60+ callouts they [Buxton Mountain Rescue team] get every year. None of us want to ever be in that situation but it could happen!’

We’re not quite sure …
