Busy Weekend Depletes Team Kit

A search of Kinder on Saturday night for sixteen students from Nottingham followed by an emergency call to Coldwell Clough near Edale Cross on Sunday afternoon for a suspected heart attack casualty and then, just an hour later, a call to a hypothermic casualty on Kinder Southern Edge left the team kit severely depleted.

Cupboards and drawers at the team base were scoured in a search for dry equipment to replace that taken from the team’s operational vehicles and now in need of drying or repair.  The two Sunday call-outs had both been in bad weather and most of the equipment had been …

Short Days – are you prepared ?

There has been a noticeable trend in recent years for the number of late afternoon and evening callouts to rise, particularly just after the clocks have gone back and when schools are on half term. The sudden reduction in daylight hours and the steady deterioration of the weather into winter catches people out.

This week has been no exception with clear freezing nights mid-week and then strong and chilling winds on Saturday, made worse by low cloud and drizzle on the tops for most of Sunday.  It’s a tricky time of year to know what to wear as the weather can be so changeable, from mild and …

The Rescue Team with the “F” Factor

Thanks to the generosity of the members of High Peak Golf Club, the oldest golf club in Derbyshire, the rescue team is £370 better off.

Each year for the past twenty-four years club members have held “The F Factor”, an auction in aid of a local charity.  For 2008 the members chose Buxton Mountain Rescue Team and within 15 minutes of the auction starting £320 had been raised.  The club topped up the donation with another £50.  The money will be used towards financing an upgrade of the team’s operational response equipment.

Thank you to all High Peak Golf Club members.

Reprint in time for Christmas

Mountain Rescue History & Development in the Peak District  written by Buxton team members Ian Hurst and Roger Bennett, is to be reprinted just in time for the Christmas present rush.

The book, first published in December 2007, does just what it says in the title and describes the origins of the modern day service from its very humble beginnings.  It starts with the explosion of British outdoor pursuits in the 1850s when the term “mountain rescue” was something you might only read in the Times relating to exploits in the Alps and beyond.   The book recalls some very early Peak District …

Flying visit from Angelsey

At 7.10pm on Wednesday 15th October the team received an urgent call for assistance from East Midlands Ambulance Service which had dispatched a Paramedic to Castle Naze above Combs near Chapel en le Frith following a report of rock climber having fallen six metres to the ground.

The casualty was thought to have severe neck and back injuries so speed was of the essence.  Castle Naze is only a couple of miles from the team’s base at Dove Holes so the first members were quickly on scene and liaising with the paramedic …

“Most Senior Casualty” a new record?

It was in the afternoon of Wednesday 25th June when the Buxton and Edale Joint Team Snatch Squad was called to the Limestone Way at Cales Dale.  A walker, part of a large rambling group, had slipped and sustained very nasty upper arm and shoulder injuries.  Access to this particular part of the Limestone Way is steep and narrow which made the stretcher evacuation quite difficult.  However, within an hour our casualty was treated, offered pain relief and carried up to the ambulance which was waiting at One Ash Grange Farm.  The casualty was taken initially to Chesterfield Royal Hospital and …
