The Easter weekend signals the start of another fund-raising season for Buxton Mountain Rescue team.
Whatever the weather, you can be sure that we’ll be out on the streets of the small hill village of Castleton in the Hope valley. Team members give up some of their family time over the long weekend to put in a non-emergency public appearance, talking to visitors and locals alike about what we do. Ultimately we hope you’ll agree our endeavours are worth while and that you’ll drop some loose change into our collection buckets. These funds really are vital for keeping our operations going …

Rose and Crown to the rescue

The Rose and Crown at Allgreave, on the A54 between Buxton and Congleton, has raised £500 for Buxton Mountain Rescue Team.
When new licensees, Ken and Karen, took over running the pub in 2010 they adopted Buxton Mountain Rescue Team as one of their local charities. Since then locals, visitors, and guests, have helped raise £100’s for the rescue team. Their latest fundraisers included a Murder Mystery Night, a New Year’s Eve Party and a special huge Teddy Bear Raffle.

Father Christmas WANTED to help

It was Ho Ho Ho in the Wanted Inn at Sparrowpit the week before Christmas when Santa popped in to deliver a few presents. The locals packed the pub and were treated to a festive night of carols accompanied by Sparrowpit Brass Band. The hosts, Steve and Sheila Philips, provided magnificent mince pies and led the party games in a fun night enjoyed by all.

Dog team commended

In March this year, team member Dave Mason, also handler of Search Dog, Megan, were called together with the Derby Mountain Rescue Team to search woodland in the Somercotes area. A 25 year old Thorntons Chocolate worker had been reported missing on her way home from the factory.

The body of Jai Ashton was located by Megan, hidden deep in woodland brush. A murder investigation by police followed, resulting in the conviction of a local man who was sentenced to serve a minimum of 28 years imprisonment.

Old Medical School write new prescription

A group of old friends,  now spread all over the Country from Scotland to London, meet every year for a weekend of walking and rambling.   This year The Old Medical School Walking Association as they are now called gathered at Merebrook and despite the wet weather had a great time.  On each occasion they hold a quiz and auction with the proceeds going to the nearest mountain rescue team.   This year it was Buxton Team’s luck to be nearest.  As nights are drawing in the £70 donation will be useful towards the cost of replacement lamp batteries.

Team honoured by Rotarians

Buxton Rotary Club recently awarded a Paul Harris Certificate to Buxton Mountain Rescue Team in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the community. Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary, and the certificate in his name is the organisation’s most prestigious award.

Since 1964, when we were established, we’ve given 47 years of service, a 24 hours, 365 days a year cover to both the local and visiting communities. Are you a quizz lover?

Then here’s a chance to indulge – and at the same time, support Buxton Mountain Rescue Team.

Last Christmas (2010), the ingenious Gillian Halliday raised money for the team by devising and selling a quizz. Encouraged by the results, Gillian has produced a new quizz for 2011. This goes on release Thurs. 1st Sept.

The theme is animals, or rather, place names within the British Isles that contain the name of an animal (not birds). Clues are cryptic, general knowledge and anagrams.

Angela Runs Again

Sunday, 19th September is the date for the Great North Run and Angela Garton from Woore near Crewe is all set to take it on again.

Angela will be one of 54,000 runners participating in what is claimed to be the largest half marathon in the world.

This year is the third time Angela has run the race to raise money for Buxton MRT and we all wish her the best of luck in trying to beat her personal best time.

Dressing up for a diamond anniversary

The small farming village of Wormhill, near Cheedale and Millers Dale, celebrates its wells of water in the ancient Derbyshire way by ‘dressing’ them. 2011 will be the 60th anniversary of this annual activity.

Aside from its purpose of bringing the community together in a creative endeavour, it is also a major fundraising event that supports local charities. Very well dressed, Buxworth

For the second year in a row, Buxworth Wells Dressing have made a donation to Buxton Mountain Rescue Team.

Thanks to the generosity of visitors in 2011, we have benefited from a donation of £200. The eye-catching design was on display at the Navigation Inn, which is a busy place now that the canal basin is restored and bustling with recreational barges and people walking the tow path.
