Grindsbrook, Kinder Scout

The Joint Snatch Squad of Edale and Buxton Mountain Rescue Teams was called following the report of two men in difficulties on Kinder Scout.  The men were on a circular walk from Hayfield when one developed an ankle problem.

Original information was sketchy and Kinder Team had been alerted first but when the location of the pair was fixed by their mobile phone signal as Grindsbrook, the two local teams took over.

Fullwood Stile Farm, Hope

With several incidents being reported simultaneously in the north of the Peak, part of Edale M.R.T. went to the assistance of  Woodhead M.R.T. in Grenoside Woods, north of Sheffield.  So when another incident was reported on Edale M.R.T.’s patch it was Buxton’s turn to help the neighbours.

A mountain biker had taken a tumble above Fulwood Stile Farm in the Edale valley sustaining spine and pelvic injuries.

Kinder Scout

A bright start to the day had deteriorated in the afternoon with snow and a severe wind chill so, when two walkers reported themselves lost on Kinder, the full Kinder search plan was initiated.

Just before darkness Kinder, Edale and Buxton Mountain Rescue Teams were called out.  Glossop team, which normally covers the northern edges, was already committed to a search in the Longdendale area so Edale team moved across to the A57 Snake road and Buxton was to spread itself east if required.

Burbage Rocks

Edale and Buxton M.R.Ts called to assist the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air-ambulance attending Burbage Rocks following the report of a fallen climber.

A twenty-eight year old lady from Sheffield had fallen approximately four metres from the rock face sustaining suspected pelvic injuries.  The casualty was treated on site by an Edale M.R.T. Doctor and paramedics from the air-craft.  She was then placed on a rescue team stretcher for the short evacuation to Burbage Bridge where the air-ambulance had landed in the middle of the road.   Following transfer …

Rushop Edge

A call-out for thirty members of the Buxton and Edale Joint Team Snatch Squad.  

A thirty-two year old man from Oadby, Leicestershire, had been parascending when he succumbed to a five metre fall.  He landed heavily close to the top of the ridge sustaining shoulder and chest injuries.  Initial treatment was by paramedics from the Warwickshire Air-ambulance and an Edale team doctor.

Following treatment the casualty was carried by rescue stretcher further up the hillside to where the aircraft was waiting on the summit.  The man was …

Peter Dale, Wardlow Mires

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team called to attend a 70 year old female who had slipped on wet limestone sustaining  a fracture dislocation of the ankle.  After treatment and pain relief on site by EMAS paramedics, the lady was carried by rescue team members on a stretcher to the waiting ambulance at Wardlow Mires.

The lady, part of a rambling group from Doncaster, was taken to Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, for further treatment.

Youlgreave, day two report and conclusion.

Day two of the search for an elderly missing gentleman from Youlgreave.   

Buxton and Derby Mountain Rescue Teams resumed their searching with additional help from Edale M.R.T. and a Search & Rescue Helicopter.

The missing man was named on Derbyshire Constabulary’s web site as Mr Gibbs, white, about 6ft tall, of medium build and with short brown greying hair. He was thought to be wearing a blue sweatshirt and brown cord trousers. Police were also asking people who live in Youlgreave, Alport, Over Haddon, Middleton, Monyash and Stanton-in-the-Peak to check …

Youlgreave

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team called, together with Derby M.R.T., to search for an elderly male missing from his home in Youlgreave.

The 83 year old man was believed to be in a confused state and police quickly became concerned for his welfare.  The two rescue teams with a number of search and rescue dogs worked along side police officers searching into the late evening but no trace of the man was found.

Higgar Tor, Hathersage

Mountain rescue was called to Higger Tor following a report that a female that had fallen approx 10-15ft on rocky ground.

The casualty, an experienced outdoor instructor from Chapel en le Frith, was leading a group of students when she fell.  She landed heavily on a rock and the resulting damage to her ribs she was creating breathing difficulties. Edale MRT members were first to respond followed by local colleagues from Buxton MRT.

Treak Cliff Cavern, Castleton.

The Snatch Squad from Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue Teams was called to the steep hillside above Treak Cliff Cavern, Castleton to assist a paraglider.

The paraglider landed hard after his canopy had collapse sustaining some potentially serious injuries.  The pilot, from the Coventry area, was assessed by rescue team members and an Edale MRT doctor before being given strong painkillers for the evacuation from the hillside by stretcher.  Given the position of the incident site, the stretcher was sledged down the steep grass using a safety rope and finally carried to the waiting Air …
