Millstone Edge

Buxton and Edale joint snatch squad called to Millstone Edge, near Hathersage, for a fallen climber.

The casualty, a 22 year old man from Oxford, fell 8m whilst bouldering. He landed on a crash mat but sustained a suspected fracture to his ankle.

He was treated for suspected spinal injuries as a precaution by an Edale doctor and EMAS paramedic, then evacuated by stretcher to a road ambulance whch took him to a hospital in Sheffield.

Over Haddon, Lathkill Dale

A mature gentleman walking with friends and family on a track slipped and sustained a head wound. East Midlands Ambulance Service paramedics were able to gain access to the casualty with a  4×4 vehicle and treated his injuries on site. The gentleman was then driven back to the road-head and transferred to an ambulance for conveyance to hospital. Mountain rescue was stood down on arrival.

Woolpacks, Kinder

Three mountain rescue teams and search dogs were called to search for lost walkers on Kinder Scout on Saturday night. The teams from Buxton, Edale and Kinder deployed 60 personnel across the southern edges of the plateau.

The two walkers, both in their early twenties from Plymouth, Devon and Attleborough, Norfolk, were on holiday in the area. They had set off to walk part of the Pennine Way onto Kinder Scout and return to Edale. They became disorientated, were overtaken by darkness and called for assistance. Luckily, their mobile phone had a signal.

Mam Tor

Buxton and Edale Snatch Squad called to a hang-gliding accident on the face of Mam Tor above Castleton.  

On arrival we located a 52 year old male who had been hang-gliding, and then collided with Mam Tor face. He was treated on site, and then taken from the face by rescue team personnel. Once transferred into an ambulance, he was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport.

The man sustained severe injuries and, sadly, died the following morning. We send our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident is being undertaken …

Kinder, Grindsbrook

Full team call-outs for Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue Teams following a call from a couple in distress in the upper reaches of Grindsbrook.  The husband and wife team from Dorset and on holiday in the Peak District were located by a police helicopter and team members were quickly guided in to their location. 

On arrival it was discovered that the lady had arggravated a previous back injury with a slip whilst descending Grindsbrook in the darkness.  The seriousness of the old injury prompted concerns about a stretcher carry causing even more damage and consequently an RAF Search & Rescue helicopter was called.

Castleton

A joint Edale Buxton teams’ Snatch Squad call-out to assist an elderly lady who had slipped whilst walking with friends.  

The lady, from Doncaster, was walking on a path between Pin Dale and Castleton when she slipped in the very muddy conditions and sustained a suspected fracture to the left ankle.   Paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service were first on scene who treated her injuries and tried to protect her from the cold weather.  On the arrival of mountain rescue she was carried by stretcher to the waiting ambulance for transport to hospital.

Stanage Edge

Edale and Buxton Snatch Squad was called to a lady who had sustained a knee injury whilst walking on the path above Stanage Edge.  The lady was made comfortable by team medics before being carried by stretcher to the roadside for onward transport to hospital.

Monks Dale

Buxton MRT was called to rendezvous in Miller’s Dale following the report of an injured walker in Monks Dale.

A 63 year old lady from Long Eaton had been walking as part of a rambling group when she slipped in the very wet and windy conditions. The lady sustained a suspected fracture of the ankle and was treated by team first aiders before being carried for over a kilometre to Glebe Farm. From there she was transferred to a waiting ambulance for transport to a Chesterfield Hospital.

Back Tor

Buxton and Edale MRTs’ Joint Snatch Squad called to assisit a female walker on Back Tor above Castleton.

The lady had sustained a suspected fracture of the ankle and was treated on site by MR medics before being transferred to an air-ambulance for further assessment in a Nottingham hospital.

Jacob’s Ladder

Three well equipped and experienced walkers set of for a round walk from Edale village taking them onto Kinder and descending via the Pennine Way back to Edale.  Whilst descending Jacob’s Ladder one of the group, a 49 year old from Manchester, simply slipped and sustained a nasty lower leg injury.

The call-out was originally routed to Kinder Team but as it became apparent that the incident was to the East of Edale Cross, Buxton team was called.
