A call-out for the joint Buxton Edale snatch squad when a simple slip on an innocuous looking grassy slope led to a suspected fracture ankle just yards from the roadside.

The 60 year old male from Chesterfield was walking with a party of friends when the slip on frozen water-logged grass caused the accident.   The weather was bright and fine but a strong northerly wind reduced the temperature to well below freezing.  Fortunately another walker was able to supply a shelter tent for the casualty whilst he waited for assistance.

Kinder Southern Edges

Following a report from two walkers benighted on Kinder Scout, Buxton Mountain Rescue Team, Edale MRT and two SARDA dogs units were called to search the Southern Edge of Kinder Scout.

The Duty Incident Controller was able to speak by mobile phone to the lost walkers and it was established that the pair were probably on Upper Tor.   However it was a black, wet night with thick hill fog so, to play safe, the usual Kinder search plan was activated.

On this occasion the couple were where they were thought to be and the pair were quickly located by Edale Team members and escorted to the valley.

On Tuesday, two mature gentlemen from St Helens set off for a day’s walk on Kinder Scout from a car park near Hayfield.   A promising day soon deteriorated with heavy rain setting in from noon onwards.  The wet conditions with low cloud cover on the summits made for difficult navigation and slow progress.  When darkness fell early the gentlmen became dissorientated and lost.

The men decided to use their experience and stay put on the moor. They spent a very uncomfortable night sharing a plastic emergency shelter bag.  The rain continued for most of the night swelling the rivers and streams.  When daylight …

The teams responded searching both banks until the couple were located and guided safely back to Edale village.
