Mam Tor

Snatch squad called to evacuate a 10 year old boy from Bury, Greater Manchester who whilst ascending the side of Mam Tor face with a family group, had slipped, fallen and rolled about 100 feet down the steep grassy and shale bank. He suffered head and back injuries. After treatment on site by a team doctor he was evacuated by stretcher a short distance to the waiting Air Ambulance, he was then airlifted to the Sheffield Childrens Hospital for further treatment.

Albaston (on border of Devon and Cornwall)

One of our SARDA handlers, having completed a weekend training on Dartmoor was requested to assist Tavistock Section – Dartmoor Rescue Group, Cornwall SRT and three local SARDA handlers in the search for an 81 year old vulnerable male who had wandered off from respite care from a residential home. The search proved negative.

Ritter Cutting, Cheedale

Following a request from a local farmer, team members located and evacuated a large lamb from an inaccessible ledge ca. 8 to 10 metres above the Monsal Trail in Cheedale. A crag lowering system was set up and the animal was lowered to the trail and after saying thank ewe, was quickly happily munching the grass as it meandered off into the distance. The farmer did not attend the rescue.

Kinder Scout

Buxton, Edale, Kinder and 3 SARDA dogs called to search for a 54 year old male from Leeds. The male who did not have a map, compass or torch had set off from Crowden the previous day and had in his own words “greatly underestimated the complexity of the Northern Peaks, became benighted and rung 999 after a blind panic) having woken up very wet and cold in the darkness after his unplanned bivvy.” Teams and dogs were deployed to search the likely area for the casualty who at first light, having lost phone signal, decided to walk off. …
