Windgather Rocks, Kettleshulme

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team called to Windgather Rocks following the report of a climber having fallen.  A woman from Harrogate, on holiday with her family, was climbing Portfolio (H.V.S. 5b) when she fell six metres striking a ledge on her descent.   Landing in a very awkward position, the casualty had sustained possible back and head injuries.   A second member of the family had sustained minor rope burns to her hands.

Monsal Dale, Putwell Hill

Whilst dealing with incident 18, a motorcycle rider came to the rescue incident control vehicle to report and accident on the rough track on Putwell Hill.   Whilst descending the steep track a trials bike rider had become parted from his machine and whilst lying on the ground was struck by another motorcycle.   The casualty was able to walk but had sustained arm injuries.

A team member dealing with the previous incident escorted an East Midland Ambulance paramedic towards the accident site to access the casualty.  A second ambulance was called for and the rider, a 49 year old man …

Monsal Dale

A lady, walking in Monsal Dale with her family, took a simple slip and sustained a suspected fracture of the right ankle.   When East Midlands Ambulance Service requested assistance fifteen Buxton Mountain Rescue Team members responded and assembled at Monsal Head.

The casualty was located near to the footbridge in Monsal Dale where team members started first aid treatment and were soon joined by EMAS paramedics.  The lady was placed on a rescue stretcher and carried for a kilometre along the river bank to the waiting ambulance.  It was during this stretcher evacuation that another incident was reported to the …

The Roaches

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was called by West Midlands Ambulance Service following reports of a rock climber falling and sustaining serious injuries.

A forty-one year man from Walsall, leading on Fern Crack, fell a substantial distance but avoided serious injury because he was wearing a helmet.  Significant damage to the helmet proved that, without it,  the casualty would have suffered serious, possibly life  threatening, injury.  As it was the man suffered a suspected ankle fracture.

An Air-ambulance was able to land on the top of the upper tier of The Roaches and team members carried the casualty on a rescue stretcher back …

Crowden Brook, Kinder Scout

Credible reports of screams being heard at the top of the Crowden Brook Gully prompted a four hour search for Buxton Mountain Rescue Team.

The alarm was raised about 4.00 pm when two screams were heard and were thought to be from someone falling in or around the steep sided gully.  Nearly thirty members responded searching the gully and Crowden Towers area in thick low cloud and deteriorating weather.  When nothing was found the search area was widened to take in nearly a kilometre of Kinder Southern Edge but still no trace of any incident was found.

Jacobs Ladder

A report of a 71 year old man from Chesterfield having collapsed on Jacobs Ladder sent members of the joint Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue Teams’ Snatch Squad on an urgent mission.   An East Midlands Ambulance crew was first at scene quickly joined by mountain rescue paramedics and doctors near to the top of the steeply stepped path.

After careful assessment the casualty was slowly assisted down the hillside to a team Land Rover at the pack-horse bridge.  The man was then transported to the ambulance waiting at the road-head where he was handed over to the care of East …

Kinder Scout

Whilst competing in the Four Inns Walk our “Fastens” team was asked to help a youth group training for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.  A 17 year old male in their party was suffering back pain and required assistance to continue.

The group had already activated their Distress Locator Beacon causing Glossop and Kinder MRTs to assemble in readiness to respond to the incident.  However, when the Buxton “Fastens” came on the scene it was decided that the youth could continue to walk with help.  The group were lead off the moor towards the Southern Edge whilst team members from …

Macclesfield Forest

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was called to Macclesfield Forest to assist North West Ambulance Service dealing with a mountain biker who had sustained a painful knee injury on Nessit Hill.

Fifteen team members responded to the call and helped to provide first aid and splinting to the casualty.  The casualty, a middle aged man from Buxton, was then loaded on to a rescue stretcher and carried out of the forest to a waiting ambulance.

Sheldon

Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue Teams’ Joint Snatch Squad responded when East Midlands Ambulance Service reqested assistance with a casualty near to the village of Sheldon.

The casualty was an adult female who sustained an injury to her upper arm.  After treatment on scene she was carried by stretcher along a footpath and across a field for a few hundred metres to a waiting road ambulance.

The ambulance transported her to a hospital in Chesterfield for further attention.

Hartshorn, Kinder Scout

A long night search in freezing conditions was rewarded when a 38 year old lady from Doncaster was located by the rescue teams and brought to safety by an RAF Seaking helicopter.

The alarm was raised about 8.30 pm when the lady was reported missing and her car was located in Edale.   Buxton Mountain Rescue Team and Edale Mountain Rescue Team were both called to commence a search of the southern edge of Kinder Scout.  The weather, although fine, was very cold with a strong wind reducing the air temperature to well below freezing.  Concern was growing for the lady’s …
