Team vehicle drivers, on stand-by at the Dove Holes Base as part of the Emergency Services Contingency Plan, were soon called by East Midlands Ambulance Service when it was reported that a 90 year old man required urgent transfer from his remote house to a Buxton nursing home.

Following deployment of  the team’s Land Rover (see incident 08) a Buxton Mountain Rescue Team vehicle, normally station at Buxton Fire Station, was on its way to take up a Stand-by position at the team’s Dove Holes Base.  Just a few minutes into the journey the crew came across a three vehicle road traffic incident on the A515 in Buxton at Cemetery Hill.

As part of an Emergency Services Contingency Plan several Peak District mountain rescue teams were asked to up-grade their availability to Stand-by when winter conditions swept across the area through Wednesday night.  Several A class roads were already becoming blocked with snow and stranded vehicles.

Buxton team was asked to deploy a Land Rover ambulance to wait at Macclesfield Ambulance Station in support of North West Ambulance Service during the period of heaviest snow fall.  No incidents requiring the team were reported and the three members with the vehicle retuned to our Dove Holes base in the late afternoon.

Four Peak District Mountain Rescue Teams and two search and rescue dogs were deployed at 23.00 hours following the report a male lost on the Kinder Plateau. The man, 28 years old from Denton, had ascended Kinder from the Hayfield side and it was believed that his intention was to make towards the Snake Road.  However he became disorientated in the darkness and mist and mountain rescue was alerted.  Not knowing his precise location or navigational experience the pre-planned, four team, Kinder Search was initiated.

A report of a man having suffered a fractured leg on the track between the head of Cave Dale and Eldon Hill (just off The Limestone Way) triggered a call-out for Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue Teams.  It had been a clear cold day but the sun was disappearing quickly behind a freezing mist.

The man, from Didsbury, Manchester, had been walking alone when he slipped on the snowy path.  Two passing walkers gave immediate help and paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service went directly to the …
