Results in for Young Buxton Cyclists

You just can’t escape folk on bikes this month…The Greater Manchester Cycle event took place on Sunday (29/6) on closed roads in Manchester City Centre.  Amongst the thousands of riders were the Parker family from Buxton, including their 2 children, Annabel 9 years, and George 8 years. Both children are pupils of St Anne’s School, Buxton, who have been keen cyclists since they were very young.

Lucky for us, Annabel and George decided to raise money for Buxton Mountain Rescue Team to support our golden anniversary appeal.  To date the children have raised more the £200, which is a terrific feat …

142 Kilometre Challenge to All Teams

In celebration of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation’s 50th Anniversary  Keith Wakely, the Team leader of Woodhead MRT,  made a challenge to all the other teams.
To pay homage to the Tour De France, which will pass through the area just one week later, that a bike ride would be a good idea.  (Good idea!?  I don’t know how many pints they had had when this decision was taken!)  The PDMRO Tour de Peak was born and it’s this Saturday 28th June….

Youngsters pedal for the rescue team.

The Great Manchester Cycle returns on Sunday 29th June with 8,000 riders expected to take to the closed roads of Manchester city centre.  Two of those riders will be on a special mission; to raise money for Buxton Mountain Rescue Team!

Derek Visits Chapel Carnival.

Derek Dummy has been a team member for over ten years and normally helps out when the team is fundraising in Castleton.  However, in summer he gets a wander-lust and this year has chosen to visit Chapel en le Frith in Carnival week.

At 1.oo pm on Saturday 21st June the Chapel en le Frith Carnival procession will start to wind its way through the village finishing at the Carnival Field at Chapel Leisure Centre with a funfair, arena displays and lots of local stalls.

Demonstrations attract attention.

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team has had two recent events to explain what mountain rescue is all about and to encourage new members for both front line operations and supporting roles.

Buxton Emergency Services Day was again blessed with good weather and thousands turned out to watch demonstrations by the police, fire and ambulance services and many more smaller organisations often overlooked by the public.   Buxton MRT was there in strength as Pavilion Gardens in Buxton became crowded from early morning.  Team Members gave periodic displays of crag-rescue techniques …

Jim Duffy, Oldham M.R.T

Buxton team members were shocked this week to here of the sudden death of Jim Duffy, a leading figure in Oldham Mountain Rescue Team.

Jim died suddenly on Thursday at the age of only 57.  Jim had been connected to mountain rescue from the age of 17 when he first joined Derby MRT.   In 1980 Jim moved to the Oldham area and soon joined the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team.  He became Team Leader in 1986 serving for six years.  Jim worked hard for team and region and was currently Equipment …

We are recruiting for new members to serve in Base Team roles

If you’ve ever thought about playing a part in Mountain Rescue but don’t have the availability to be on-call, nor quite the skills or fitness for active hill service, then Base Team Membership may be for you.

A lot goes on behind the scenes to keep the Rescue Team fully operational on the hill: Base Team Members can participate in Team activities such as training, fund raising and publicity. Forty Years a member and still at the sharp end.

Peter Farrer, of Chapel en le Frith, has been celebrating forty years continuous years as an operational member of the team.   Joining the rescue team with two friends in 1974 Peter is the only one of the trio still an active member.  Peter has always been a keen hill going member but also served on the management committee of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team for twenty-two years as Honorary Treasurer and after a short break returned two years ago as Fundraising Manager, a post he still holds.  Not …
