Peaseland Rocks, Wolfscote Dale

Buxton search dog, Megan, with handler, Dave Mason, assisted in locating an injured casualty when the team was called to the aid of a large group of young walkers. Because of cell-phone communication problems, the exact position of the group was uncertain at the start of the incident but Megan soon led the rescuers to the scene.  See team call-out for fuller details.

Froghall, Staffordshire

Crowden and Torside

Dave Mason with search dog, Megan, and Nick Smith with search dog, Zak, along with four other Peak District search dog teams carried out an intensive search around Torside and Crowden in the Woodhead Pass. They were looking for a 51 year old male from Manchester who has been missing since January.  

New information and the thawing of the snow cover led the police to ask for mountain rescue assistance but still nothing was found.

Kinder, Southern Edge

Search Dog Zak with handler Nick Smith together with two other search dogs were called to support a four team incident on Kinder Scout.

Bleaklow

Buxton Team Dog Handlers, Dave Mason and Nick Smith with Search Dogs Megan and Zak were called in the late evening to assist three rescue teams from Glossop, Kinder and Oldham with a search from the Snake Road.

The call started at 21.00 following a report of two males overdue from a day’s walking on Bleaklow Moor, north of the A57 Snake Pass Road. Heavy snow and wind caused white-out conditions for the rescue parties which were hampered by the severe risk of avalanche as fresh snow built up on the historic snow pack.

Sheffield

Search Dog Megan with handler, Dave Mason called for a snowy night search of a golf course in Sheffield.   Four search dogs together with Woodhead and Edale MRTs were all called late at night to seek a 75 year old male suffering with Alzheimer’s Disease who had failed to return from a trip to the local shops in the afternoon. 

The weather was bitterly cold with temperatures below freezing and snow falling.  A member of the public remembered seeing the gentleman near the golf club in the afternoon so the search was concentrated …

Kinder, Southern Edge

Buxton Search Dogs Megan with Dave Mason and Zak with handler Nick Smith were called together with three other Peak District SARDA dog units to assist in locating five persons reported lost on Kinder Scout. 

The timely finding of the casualties meant that four of the dog units were not deployed on to the hill but Dave Mason and Megan were well committed searching up the Grindsbrook Valley before the stand-down.

Kinder Scout

Hardly having time to “paws” Zak with handler, Nick Smith, was called out again to assist with a major search of Kinder Scout for a man and his teenage son. Nick and Zak were tasked to search Crowden Brook and had got all the way over the moor to Kinder Downfall before they were informed that the casualties had been located by another dog unit in Red Brook.

Bleaklow

Handler Nick Smith with Search Dog Zak were called to rendezvous at Heatherdene car park to assist Glossop and Edale MRTs searching for two females lost in deteriorating weather conditions.

The dog team with a navigator from Buxton MRT was tasked to search Raven Clough but was stood down when the missing persons were located by members of Glossop MRT near Fork Stones in Grains in the Water.

Snake Summit

Search Dog Zak with handler Nick Smith called to the summit of the A57 Snake Road to search for three males reported as lost on Bleaklow.   The search dog team was stood down en-route when the missing persons were located safe and well by members of Glossop M R T.
