In the third call of the weekend, the Buxton Edale snatch squad was called to evacuate a 58 year old male who had slipped on the footpath below Ringing Roger and sustained a lower leg injury. The casualty was treated on site by team members and evacuated by stretcher to the roadhead.
Whilst the previous incident was running, the teams were made aware of a second incident on the Sledgetrack leading down from Grindslow Knoll. Team members along with an air ambulance were diverted to assist in the evacuation of a 50 year old male from Knutsford who sustained a suspected ankle fracture when he slipped in mud on the path whilst descending from the knoll. After treatment on site by EMAS paramedics, the casualty was evacuated to the air ambulance. Kinder team were also called at this point in case either casualty had needed an extended carry off.
Buxton Edale snatch squad called to evacuate a 59 year old walker who had fallen approximately 6m/20ft whilst scrambling in the waterfalls in the gorge at the head of Crowden Brook. The first team members and kit were flown up the hill by the Derbyshire Police helicopter with other parties making their way on foot. After examination by MR doctors revealed that the casualty was suffering from a significant injury, a possible dislocated knee or upper leg fracture, a head injury and hypothermia. Buxton team members fitting out the new vehicle on base were called by a member of the public who had seen a dog fall of the edge of the main face of Mam Tor as it chased a bird. The caller was concerned that the owner was trying to recover the body of the dog, which was killed instantly, from the steep scree slopes. When the team arrived, the owner from Mansfield Woodhouse had recovered the dog, a greyhound, and was safe.
Buxton Edale snatch called to locate and evacuate a group of 4 females plus 1 dog from Merseyside that set off on a walk from Edale and fell into difficulties when one of the party, a 37 year old female started to suffer abdominal pain having recently undergone a surgical procedure. The party were quickly located by team members and the casualty carried off by stretcher to the youth hostel.
Buxton Edale Snatch Squad called to evacuate a 15 year old female from Bamford who collapsed whilst walking with a friend. After treatment on site by MR doctors, the casualty was evacuated by stretcher to the roadhead and taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital by ambulance.
Buxton team called to assist Kinder with the evacuation of a 52 year old male from Sheffield who slipped and sustained back and possible pelvic injuries following a fall on sheet ice whilst descending the Pennine Way. Kinder team had originally been called earlier to the incident but called for additional assistance when an RAF Seaking was unable to land due to fog. The casualty was evacuated by stretcher to Lee House using the new team landrover to light the path for the stretcher party.
Buxton Edale snatch squad called to evacuate a 58 year old male from Millers Dale who had slipped on ice in the gorge at the top of the clough whilst out walking with his dog. The casualty who had sustained a suspected dislocation of the knee had to lower himself down the gulley until he managed to get a mobile signal. The casualty was treated on site by team members before being evacuated on a stretcher using rope rescue to the top of the gulley where he was evacuated to Chesterfield by air ambulance.
Team members marshalling the Christmas Cracker Fell Race were called to assist a 57 year old male runner from Hazel Grove who slipped and fell on sheet ice sustaining a shoulder injury. The casualty was treated by team members and transported by team ambulance to the race control for onward transport to hospital.
Buxton, along with several other teams and search dogs put on seearch standby for a missing female who had not checked on any of the checkpoints after registering for a fell race from Marsden to Edale. Due to the large potential search area, worsening weather conditions and lack of sightings, a number of teams and the search dogs were alerted.
The team was stood down about an hour later when local police enquiries located the woman safe and well at her home in Matlock. She had not told the organisers that she had decided not to compete.
