Leek. Hoax call – youths arrested.

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team and Derby MRT, together with three search dogs were called out by Staffordshire Police in relation to a 999 call the ambulance service had received the previous evening.  The rendezvous point was near the Brittania Building Society headquarters in Leek, behind which is a steep and large wooded area.

The 999 call indicated that a youth had fallen from a mountain bike in dense woodland and was unable to move.  The call was thought to be suspicious and the police were alerted.   Whilst it was was strongly believed that the call had been a hoax, the police had to be certain so the …

Valkyrie, at the Roaches, Staffordshire.

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team called to rendezvous at the Roaches, near Upper Hulme in Staffordshire to assist climbers.

An incident had occurred on the lower tier whereby a 38 year old male rock climber from Shrewton, Wiltshire, was injured when a large rock slab on which he had been climbing was dislodged.  The climber was on the classic VS 4b, 4c, 39 metre route known as Valkyrie when the slab, about the size of a single mattress, came off and struck his arm and head.

Mam Tor

A Buxton and Edale joint snatch squad was called on Sunday afternoon to respond to the report of a man having collapsed on Mam Tor, near Castleton.

The seriousness of the incident soon became apparent when East Midlands Ambulance Control alerted the teams that cardiopulmonary resuscitation had already been started by members of the public on Mam Tor.   The Yorkshire air-ambulance was landing on the summit as team members arrived at the rendezvous point and paramedics were with the casualty within minutes.  Snatch squad rescue team members quickly climbed the popular tourist route bearing additional medical equipment.

Monsal Trail, Rowdale near Great Longstone

A joint Edale & Buxton Mountain Rescue snatch squad call-out was initiated in a weekend afternoon following the report of a casualty having collapsed on the Monsal Trail near Rowdale.

Eight Buxton team members rendezvoused with ten Edale team members on the A6020 between Ashford and Hassop Station roundabout to assist a 61 year old female walker from Wigan who had felt unwell whilst out walking.

Fortunately the lady recovered sufficiently to be able to walk with assistance to the road.  The lady declined to go to hospital and the teams stood …

Hen Cloud, The Roaches

Team called to Hen Cloud near the Roaches in Staffordshire following the report of a fallen climber.

On arrival the team found a 37 year old female from Wirksworth in Derbyshire being treated by paramedics from the Midlands Air-ambulance and crew from a West Midlands Ambulance.  First Responders from Flash were also on site so with all first aid in hand the team set about rigging a rope system to steady the stretcher as the casualty was lowered from near the top of Hen Cloud to a position from where she could be transferred to the helicopter.   Chest high bracken hampered the evacuation …

Mam Tor Ridge

Early on Monday morning 18 members of the Buxton and Edale joint snatch squad responded to a call to assist a 64 year old walker.   A simple slip had resulted in a suspected fracture to the right ankle for the local man from Buxton.  

An air-ambulance was just approaching the scene as team members arrived but the helicopter was unable to land on the steep sides of Mam Tor.  So it was up to the rescue team members to carry the casualty in the old fashioned way before loading him into a land ambulance.

A54, Macclesfield Road, Buxton

Very late on a Friday evening, East Midlands Ambulance Service requested the assistance of mountain rescue in dealing with a serious road traffic incident on the A54 Macclesfield Road near to Turret Plantation.

A 20 year old motorcyclist from Llangollen in North Wales had landed some 40 feet below the road level in a steep ravine and stream bed.  An East Midlands ambulance crew was already treating the significant injuries that the motorcyclist had sustained but the team was required to set-up a lift system to bring the casualty back to the roadside.  The police closed the A class road to protect …

Harpur Hill Quarry, Buxton

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was called to assist East Midlands Ambulance Service at the disused quarries at Harpur Hill, Buxton where youths had been swimming.

The group of youths had been splashing and diving into the water pools at the bottom of the quarry when one of them suffered a suspected fracture of the lower left leg.  Ambulance service personnel were first on scene to attend to the youth’s injuries but mountain rescue was called to haul the casualty up the steep sides of the old quarry. The team were already assembled at the event for Emergency Services Day in Buxton when a call-out for a joint Buxton/Edale snatch squad relating to a medical emergency was received. The incident involved a fourteen year old boy on the Pennine Way at Jacob’s Ladder.  The boy was part of a Duke of Edinburgh silver expedition from a school in Saffron Waldon, Essex. 

Kinder MRT was already in the vicinity having just completed a training exercise when the alarm was raised and was able to divert several members to the scene.   The Yorkshire …
