Doxey's Pool, the Roaches

Poor weather and reduced visibility prevented an air-ambulance attending this incident on the Roaches.  The team was called to rendezvous at Roach End to assist a 34 year old male walker who had slipped and sustained a lower leg injury near Doxey’s Pool on the Roaches ridge.  Ambulance paramedics were first to arrive and treated the casualty who was then loaded onto a mountain rescue stretcher.  Wind and low cloud hampered the 1.5 kilometre carry off to a waiting ambulance which then transferred the man to North Staffordshire Hospital.

Another animal in distress!  This time a sheep which had been chased by a pet dog off the lead and had been forced to run into the reservoir.  The sheep had swum some distance before beaching itself at the foot of the steepest crag on the reservoir.  The sheep had been isolated for two days before the rescue team was called in by a local farmer on Monday evening.

Water-cum-Jolly, Cressbrook

A regular Thursday evening training session on crag safety developed into a practical exercise when a call was received from a distressed dog owner in Cressbrook.

A 2 year old Dalmatian had fallen from the top of Water-cum-Jolly landing on a rocky ledge some 20 metres above the River Wye.  Fifteen members escaped from the classroom to answer the call which involved lowering a team member armed with dog-biscuits to where the animal was stranded.  Collecting the dog in a makeshift harness the pair were then gently lowered another 20 metres to the ground to be …

Cranberry Clough, Upper Derwent Valley

Whilst packing up from a previous task another incident involving a mountain biker was reported.  Woodhead MRT had already been called to the accident in the upper Derwent Valley but it transpired that access to the casualty site would be easier from the bottom of the valley.  Not Buxton’s patch, but being in the area five members went to assist.

The mountain biker, from York, had been thrown over the handlebars but because he was wearing a helmet suffered only abrasions and a fractured collar bone.   With the help of his friends the casualty had been able to make his own way to Fairholmes …

Stanage Edge

An unusual call for us to Stanage Edge on a weekend which is normally the sole responsibility of Edale MRT, but as most of its members were covering other emergencies, Buxton MRT filled the gap.

Thirteen of us assembled at High Neb to assist ten Edale members dealing with a 25 year old male from Wembley, London, who had fallen from the 5C route, The Dalesman.  The man was part of a Kingston Climbing Club weekend trip to the Peak and had been leading the route when he fell about 3 metres and swung into the rock-face.

The casualty suffered a suspected fracture of …

Kinder Scout

Mid-afternoon; what was at first thought to be a simple, single team call out, escalated into one for three teams and three search dogs to locate lost walkers on the high moorland.

About lunch time Kinder team had been called to assist two female walkers from Grimsby who had got into difficulties in poor visibility and strong winds on Kinder Scout.  It was first thought the couple were at or around the Kinder Downfall area and Kinder MRT dispatched a small search section to the location.   When the team reported that there was …

Kinder Scout

Buxton team was called out and two other Peak District teams put on stand-by following a telephone call from a young couple lost in the thick low cloud and heavy rain in the middle of Kinder Scout.

The couple, from Bristol, had lost their way after the batteries in their GPS failed.  The poor weather and the prospect of darkness prompted an immediate reaction and members of Buxton team were called to rendezvous at Edale.   However the couple were able to attract the attention of other walkers on the moor who led them to safety down Grindsbrook.   The search was called off …
