Peakshole Water, Hope

A retired 69 year old male, walking with a friend by the river between Hope and Castleton, suffered an acute collapse. 

The casualty from Cheadle Hulme was first assisted by East Midlands paramedics with heart monitoring equipment before fourteen Buxton & Edale Mountain Rescue Snatch Squad members arrived to carry him by stretcher to an ambulance waiting at the roadside.  Air-ambulances were not available so the casualty was transfered by road to a Sheffield hospital.

Birchens Edge

Despite being on a top rope and wearing a helmet, a 46 year old man from Manchester suffered significant head injuries in a fall at Birchens Edge.

The Edale and Buxton Snatch Squad responded with 14 members to assist an East Midlands Ambulance crew with first aid before the casualty was carried to an Air-ambulance.  The injuries were such that he was flown directly to a neurological centre in Nottingham for further assessment and treatment.

Stanage Edge

Edale and Buxton MRTs’ Snatch Squad called to the Manchester Buttress area of the popular gritstone climbing crag to assist a 48 year old man.  The casualty had been leading a climb when he fell approximately 8 metres causing suspected injuries to his back and pelvis.

Fifteen rescue team members and local climbers carried the casualty by stretcher to the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air-ambulance for transfer to a Sheffield hospital.

Mam Tor, Castleton

Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue teams acted as a snatch squad to assist a 70 year old female on the route off Mam Tor towards Mam Nick.

The lady, from Marple, was with a family group and was descending from the summit of Mam Tor when she slipped and twisted a knee. Team first aiders treated the lady who was then carried by stretcher to the car park to wait for an ambulance which would transport her to a Stockport hospital for further assessment.

Grindsbrook, Kinder Scout.

Just minutes after the radio-pagers sounded to call the team to the previous incident a second accident was reported and this time it was totally appropriate to mountain rescue. 

A 26 year old female from Oxford had been walking with her husband on the southern edge of Kinder Scout when a simple slip aggravated an old knee injury preventing her from continuing.  With Buxton team already committed with an incident it was left to Edale MRT to start the rescue and members made their ascent from Edale village. 13th Hole, Chapel-en-le-Frith Golf Club

East Midlands Ambulance Service called for the assistance of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team to carry a 64 year old man from the middle of Chapel en le Frith golf course to a waiting roadside ambulance. 

The man was enjoying a round when he splipped and sustained a suspected fractured ankle. With conditions so wet underfoot the ambulance staff called for the help of the rescue team rather than risk another injury carrying the man off the course.  The man, from Hazel Grove, was treated by E.M.A.S. paramedics before being taken to a Stockport hospital.

Crowden Brook, Kinder Scout

Derbyshire police called for mountain rescue following a 999 call from afamily trapped at the head of Crowden Brook by the steep and slippery conditions caused by the recent heavy rain and snow melt. 

The four family members, on holiday from London, included a  69 year old female, a 43 year old male and two children aged 6 and 4 years.

Kinder Scout, Southern Edge

As the previous call-out was coming to a conclusion another 999 call was received by the police.  This time two walkers had become disorientated in low cloud and rain as they made their way across Kinder’s high plateau.

Odin Mine, Mam Tor

A call-out for both Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue Teams’ as a snatch squad following a 999 report of two men crag fast near to Blue John Cavern near Castleton. 

On arrival team members began to search for the casualties who were known to be within half an hours walk of the cavern.   Whilst the steep faces of Mam Tor were the obvious areas to search, first checks were made down in the deep limestone gullies above Odin Mine. It was here that the two men from Leicester were located.

Upper Burbage Bridge

A joint Buxton and Edale Snatch Squad call-out to assist a 24 year old male from Tumbridge Wells, Kent, who had fallen 10 metres from a climbing route known as Edale Slabs and had sustained lower back and pelvic injuries.

The casualty was treated on site by ambulance service paramedics before being carried by stretcher to the waiting Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance for a short flight to a hospital in Sheffield.
