Chapel Gate Track, Rushup Edge

Joint Buxton and Edale Teams’ snatch squad called to an incident involving an off-road motorcyclist.  The motorcyclist parted company with his machine whilst descending the Chapel Gate Track from Rushup Edge to the Mam Nick road.  

Early information about the exact location of the incident was poor so Edale MRT climbed up the track whilst Buxton MRT went from the top down.  Edale members were first to locate the biker and rendered first aid.  An air-ambulance attended the scene but the injuries were not considered serious enough for an aerial evacuation.  The casualty was carried on a  mountain rescue stretcher to a waiting road …

Taddington and Monsal Dales

Buxton Team together with colleagues from Derby and Kinder Teams assembled at the Waterloo Inn, Taddington for a pre-arranged police search involving a missing male.

The local man has been missing for some time. Police enquires had identified a number of areas in the Taddington Dale and Monsal Dale areas, where he may have met with an accident.

Mountain rescue personnel were deployed into the steep, heavily wooded dale sides, which also included a number of cliff faces. Searching this sort of terrain presents some degree of difficulty for rescuers and is very labour intensive.

Kinder Southern Edges

Four rescue teams from Buxton, Edale, Kinder and Glossop together with a number of Search Dog Units were called at dawn following the report of a male fell-runner missing overnight. 

The usual Kinder South search plan was activated with the four teams starting to assemble in readiness to send members across the moor from various starting points.  Buxton MRT was to work from Edale Station but fortunately, as members were being deployed, the runner managed to find his way back to Crookstone Barn.  Having spent a cold night on the hill and suffering an ankle injury he was transported by a rescue team …

Stanage

A Joint Edale and Buxton MRT Call-out for a 30 year old male climber who fell whilst leading at Stanage, sustaining a head and neck injury. After treatment on scene by mountain rescue members along with air ambulance staff, he was evacuated from the crag and to the air ambulance at the bottom, before being taken to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. His climbing helmet was significantly damaged in the incident – however, wearing the helmet prevented him from sustaining a much more serious injury.

Harpur Hill Quarries

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team called to the disused limestone quarries at Harpur Hill above Buxton.  The quarry, long since abandoned, is a mecca for serious climbers offering a number of quality routes both free and aided.  The down side of the is that, like most old quarries, the rock can be unstable following blasting and years of water / frost penetration.

Two mature climbers were attempting an E5 route known as Hollowman when the leader allegedly dislodged a loose flake of limestone which crashed to the ground striking a glancing blow to his belaying partner.  …

Kinder, Southern Edges

Three Mountain Rescue Teams involved in a lengthy night-time search for a missing person participating in the Bullock Smithy Challenge, a 24hr long distance walk covering 56 miles of the Peak District.

The missing person, a 50 year old male from Hazel Grove, made the Edale Cross checkpoint at 17:30 but failed to make the next one in Edale village. Well into the evening he was reported as overdue and this triggered a search for Buxton team, later supported by both Edale and Kinder. Just before dawn the next day, the missing person turned up where mountain rescue vehicles were waiting …

Calver

A joint snatch squad to assist the ambulance service evacuate a local lady from steep slopes near Coombs Dale.

The casualty, a 59 year old woman who lives nearby, was out walking in fine weather with friends, when she slipped on steep grassy slopes and injured the base of her spine. After being treated on scene, the Mountain Rescue Teams carried her on a short but tricky stretcher transfer to a playing field where an air ambulance was waiting. She was thence transported to a hospital in Chesterfield for further treatment.

Stanage

A joint Buxton Edale snatch squad to assist an injured climber doing Goliath’s Grove, Stanage.

The male casualty had fallen and landed on his back causing impact injuries. He was treated on site, evacuated by stretcher and transferred to an air ambulance for onward journey to a hospital in Sheffield.

New Piece Wood, Calton Houses

A call from East Midlands Ambulance Service following the report of an eighty year old woman having fallen and sustained a shoulder injury.   Early information regarding the location of the incident was very vague and was reported to be ” – on a footpath between Bakewell and Calton Farm!”

The joint Edale and Buxton MRT’s Snatch Squad was placed on standby until a better location was determined.  The incident transpired to have occurred near New Piece Woods on the hillside above Calton Lees Garden Centre on the Chatsworth Estate.  Shortly after the Snatch Squad was redirected to the incident a call from E.M.A.S. stood the teams …

Linacre Woods

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team together with Edale, Derby and Woodhead MRT’s were asked by Derbyshire Police to conduct a further search for a missing person. The search was a continuation of one conducted on 20 August and the police helicopter and rescue boat were involved together with mountain rescue search dogs.

The missing person, a 42 year old man from Dronfield, had not been seen since 19 August and police were concerned for his safety. Away from the footpaths much of the ground is covered by extremely dense undergrowth and was very difficult to search.
