On Wednesday night, 27 members of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team, together with two search dogs, began a 4 hour operation to locate and recover a walker benighted on Kinder Scout.

The 33 year old male from Cambridge had called for assistance when it was clear that he wasn’t going to make it off the hill in daylight. He had set off from Edale Village in the morning, embarking on a lengthy route taking in a large part of the Edale Watershed. Returning towards Edale on the Old Pennine Way route across Kinder he became lost.

Staffordshire Police requested assistance in recovering an elderly female who was stranded in a car that had lost control on sheet ice along an untreated minor road.

On arrival it was clear that the road was dangerously icy: it was impossible to stand on the approach to the steep incident section and not slip, so team members had to use crampons and ice grippers to access the vehicle. Teaam called in the afternoon following reports of an injured person in Forest Wood, east of Lud’s Church. The weather conditions were thick hill mist, freezing rain, with snow covering the ground.

The casualty, a 17 year old female from Hasland, Chesterfield, had slipped and sustained lower leg injuries whilst walking. Team members were deployed with equipment, assisted by a local farmer in his off-road vehicle. Having been stationary for about 2 hours, the casualty was very cold, wet, and in pain. The Derby Team member who found her provided some initial care. This was boosted by further treated on site …

Kinder Scout, Southern Edges

A joint snatch squad of Buxton and Edale Mountina Rescue teams, together with 4 search dogs, responded to a call-out for two walkers stranded by an icy waterfall on the plateau.

The missing walkers were a male aged 26, and a lady, aged 35, both from Dronfield near Chesterfield. Both were equipped for a days walking, carried a rucksack and a map. Although neither were injured, it was dark, very cold and the fact that they had fallen on ice into water attempting to descend Crowden Brook created concern about their welfare.

Rescue units were deployed from Jacobs Ladder to Golden Clough. …
