Cat and Fiddle road, A537

Another vehicle stuck in snow and a second trip to the Cat and Fiddle, Buxton to Macclesfield Road.  Police alerted the team to a VW van which had become stranded after ignoring the obvious “Road closed” signs. Concern for the welfare of the driver in the blizzard conditions meant the team responded with two members in its Land Rover. 

Road conditions were appalling with deep snow obliterating the edges of the roadway. The team arrived to find the vehicle in the safe hands of two 4×4 recovery vehicles!

A623 Tideswell Moor

A number of vehicles became stranded in deep snow on the A623, Tideswell Moor road as the snow continued to fall.  

The police were treating the matter seriously as it looked as if the motorist would be stuck in their vehicles overnight.  Buxton and Edale MRTs were asked to ferry the motorists to a place of sanctuary for the night.  Edale MRT was already dealing with another incident on Houdkirk Moor but Buxton team was able to rally members which had just returned from a previous incident.  A fleet of nine team and privately owned 4×4 vehicles had just set off towards Tideswell Moor …

Kinder Low

A full team call-out for three rescue teams and search dogs following a report from two walkers stranded in darkness and blizzard conditions on the southwest point of Kinder Scout.

The walkers had visited Kinder Downfall but their only map blew away from their hands. In failing light and heavy snow they made their way along the edge path to find Kinder Low trig point.  But, with no map and a damaged compass they were unable to orientate their route off.

Cat and Fiddle, A537

Team members responded to calls for help from a local bus company when the Macclesfield to Buxton service became stranded in deep snow on the A537.  The bus was pulled from the drifts and was assisted to turn back for Macclesfield.  One passenger was travelling to a church service in Buxton and team members obliged by taking her to the church door. You could say we like to provide a “service”.

Lose Hill, Hope Valley

Deep snow hampered the rescuers called to Lose Hill to assist a 55 year old lady complaining of chest pains.   Edale & Buxton MRTs rendezvoused at Spring House Farm being the nearest access for vehicles in the winter conditions, leaving 750 foot of asscent to the casualty site. 

After treatment on site the lady was carried to an air-ambulance for transfer to hospital.

Parkhouse Hill, Hollinsclough, Longnor

A call from Derbyshire police to assist with the recovery of a body from the foot of Parkhouse hill.   It is presumed that the man had fallen several metres whilst attempting to climb the ridge in the winter conditions.  The middle aged male, thought to be a regular walker from Ashbourne, had been alone at the time of the accident and the exact time and circumstances of the incident have yet to be established.

East Midlands Ambulance Support

A small group of team members were called to a house in Chapel en le Frith where an elderly lady had fallen and sustained a serious head injury.  Owing to the severe pressure that the ambulance service are currently experiencing due to the severe weather no ambulance was available and mountain rescue was called.

The team had a vehicle with a crew of three trained advanced first aiders on scene within 15 minutes but Kinder MRT were even quicker off the mark arriving just minutes before Buxton.

The lady was assessed by team medics and a speedy transfer to a Stockport hospital …

North West Ambulance support

Team members called to relieve exhausted colleagues in Kinder and Glossop teams who have been on standby to assist North West Ambulance Service. 

Both Kinder and Glossop MRTs had been on constant standby for the ambulance service since Monday night.  During that time team members have worked in shifts around the clock to provide a 4 x 4 vehicle emergency response to any location badly effected with the weather.  Both teams have answered many 999 calls for the ambulance service and dealt with many casualties but there is only so much that volunteers can do.  When the teams were asked to continue providing …

Tunstead Quarry, Great Rocks, Buxton

Buxton Team called by Derbyshire Fire Service to assist with the evacuation of a casualty from a tall structure in the quarry workings.  The casualty, a 45 year old man from Chesterfield, had suffered a serious medical collapse whilst working at a great height. It was first thought that an aerial rope-way rescue would be required. However, ambulance and fire service personnel were able to carry the man to ground level. He was then transferred to a helicopter. 

The call-out was cancelled as team members were arriving at the scene.

Greater Manchester

On Monday night severe weather gripped the whole of the North West with heavy snow falling across the region causing chaos on the roads.   Whilst conditions were bad locally with 15 cms of fresh snow in Buxton the Greater Manchester region had it even worse causing many roads to become impassable.
