Incident report

The team responded to a call for assistance for the third time in three consecutive days to the same part of Kinder Scout, late afternoon on Thursday 2nd January 2020

We were alerted to a group of 3 lost walkers and their dog, on Kinder Scout plateau. Their location was believed to be close to the top of Crowden Brook. Three search sections quickly set off from different locations in the valley heading towards the top of Crowden Brook, to try to locate the missing party.

Thankfully the party was quickly located, provided with shelter, food and warm drinks. They were then walked off the plateau down to the waiting vehicles, and taken back to Edale.

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team Team Leader Neil Carruthers said that “weather conditions on the Kinder Scout plateau can be very different to that in the valley below. With short days, darkness and hill fog, it is easy to lose your way. With these three recent call outs, people have done the right thing and called for help, and more importantly they did exactly what they were told to do and stayed in one position; its much easier for the rescuers to find a stationary missing person”.

Nearly four hours after being called out, the team was stood down. It had been a busy end of 2019 and start of 2020 for the voluntary rescuers.
