Incident report

While descending from Grindslow Knoll, one member of a party of walkers slipped and sustained a lower leg injury. After attempting to continue the descent it soon became clear that further efforts to self-recue would result in making the injury worse. The party took the sensible decision of calling out mountain rescue.

Team members and vehicles were soon at the car park in Edale, to begin the task of ferrying medical and other equipment up the hill to the casualty. The first section to arrive at the scene carried out an assessment of the injuries and it was decided that it would be necessary to carry the casualty off the hill on a mountain rescue stretcher.

As darkness fell, further team members arrived and the casualty was soon on the stretcher, ready to begin the journey down the Sled Track back to Edale. The use of a wheel on the stretcher makes for a more comfortable ride for the casualty and reduces the effort needed to carry the load. By this time, full darkness had descended but, with the use of head torches and great teamwork, the journey down the rocky and narrow section of path was done very efficiently, and the stretcher party was swiftly crossing the final field and back into Edale.

Our colleagues from East Midlands Ambulance Service were soon on scene, and able to take over the medical treatment of the casualty.

Team equipment was then given a thorough cleansing as per our Covid-19 protocols and packed back on to the vehicles for return to base.

We wish the casualty a quick recovery and hope to see the whole party back on the hills again soon.
