Incident report
Buxton Mountain Rescue Team were asked to search for a party of teenagers believed lost in the Goyt Valley area on Sunday.
The group of 5 girls from the Suffolk area were taking part in a Duke of Edinburgh Award practice expedition and were last seen climbing up towards Shining Tor. They had not reported into any checkpoints and were 2 hours overdue.
The party leaders were concerned and provided route details intended for the group. Team members were deployed onto various footpaths, on either side of the Shining Tor Ridge into the Jenkin Chapel and Lamaload areas to the west and the Goyt Valley to the east. Our vehicles carried out a mobile containment on the local roads. The party of girls were located sitting on the moor beside the Cat & Fiddle Inn, none the worse for their experience.
A team spokesman said “ They were one of three groups on the hill practising their navigation along specific routes. They had been told to switch off their mobile phones, which meant we couldn’t speak to them. We located them at their final checkpoint, safe and well, and returned them to their group leaders”.
