Incident report

While leading a route on Froggat Edge a visiting climber had taken a fall, sustaining a head and back injury on impact with the ground. A 999 call was made by a friend of the climber to Derbyshire Constabulary who in turn called out both Edale Mountain Rescue Team and Buxton MRT.

During the week a joint call out esures that sufficient team members are on hand to assist with the incident.

First to arrive on scene was an East Midlands Ambulance Service paramedic responder followed by an EMICS doctor and the Helimed from the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance.

After assessing the climber’s injuries, the casualty was given pain relief and placed in a ‘vacc mattress’ which allows full body immobilisation. The stretcher evacuation from the base of the crag required great team work to pass the casualty down through the rocks, and then back up to the top of the crag.

After placing the stretcher on a wheel, to aid the carry off, the climber was then carried back to the main road and the waiting ambulance from EMAS. After further assessment the climber was then transported to hospital to continue the medical treatment.

We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and send our thanks for the patience shown by other walkers and drivers who were delayed during the incident.
