Incident report

Buxton Edale snatch squad called to evacuate an 11 year old boy from Mansfield, Notts who had been walking down the old Mam Tor Road with his parents when he was blown over the edge by the very strong winds. He fell about 50 feet, landing on a very steep rocky hillside. He was initially unconscious and also sustained injuries to his head, shoulder, elbow and ankle. He was treated on site by ambulance service paramedics, an air ambulance attended and made several attempts to land. However, because of the very strong winds this became impossible and was aborted. The casualty was evacuated by stretcher to the roadhead. This was a difficult process due to the stong wind, the terrain and his injuries. The stretcher had to be carried as close to the ground as possible using the straps to create the least wind resistance. The casualty was transferred to the waiting road ambulance and taken to the Childrens Hospital, Sheffield for further treatment.
