Incident report

A report  by a concerned passerby to the Peak National Park Information Centre at Castleton resulted in a 999 call to the police about a family stranded on the roadside between Mam Tor and Barber Booth. phone 03 Jan 10 023

The Sheffield family had come to the area for a day of sledging in the snow but in the process lost their car keys.  The family, including a 10 year old and a 7 year old, became very cold whilst they waited over 2 hours for a vehicle rescue organisation to turn out. When informed of the situation, Buxton Mountain Rescue Team members knew there was little chance of a vehicle recovery being attempted in the prevailing conditions.  Fearing for the safety of the children, two members set out in the team Land Rover to collect the family and take them to a place of shelter and warmth.

Having collected the family, the group later met with the vehicle rescue waggon which was able to take over responsibility for the situation.

I would like to say thank you to the team for assisting my daughter and the family. I alerted the Derbyshire poice who informed the rescue team but my daughter tells me that the passers by also alerted the team for which I am also grateful. It was an incident which was potentially serious. My husband and I were in Rotherham co-ordinating with the recovery assistance and we were so worried as the light was fading and the temperature was dropping. To cap it all there was intermittent mobile reception. So please thank the rescuers. Our grandchildren really did appreciate the mars bars and will no doubt now see it as an adventure and something to write about when they return to school tomorrow. They were all safe thanks to your team.
