A report by a concerned passerby to the Peak National Park Information Centre at Castleton resulted in a 999 call to the police about a family stranded on the roadside between Mam Tor and Barber Booth.
The Sheffield family had come to the area for a day of sledging in the snow but in the process lost their car keys. The family, including a 10 year old and a 7 year old, became very cold whilst they waited over 2 hours for a vehicle rescue organisation to turn out. When informed of the situation, Buxton Mountain Rescue Team members knew there was little chance of a vehicle recovery being attempted in the prevailing conditions. Fearing for the safety of the children, two members set out in the team Land Rover to collect the family and take them to a place of shelter and warmth.
Having collected the family, the group later met with the vehicle rescue waggon which was able to take over responsibility for the situation.
