Buxton team called to assist an East Midlands Ambulance Service crew in the Goyt Valley, following reports of a walker in difficulty on moorland south of Errwood Hall.
A male walker of 63 years of age was suffering chest pains. He was treated on site by ambulance service paramedics together with the crew of the Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Rutland Air Ambulance which had landed nearby. Following treatment, the casualty was placed on a stretcher so that he could be carried by the team some 500 metres across difficult ground to the waiting helicopter.
The gentleman was then airlifted to Wythenshaw Hospital, South Manchester, for further treatment.
This ‘male walker’ was my husband and we were actually out bilberrying for a pie for tea! We love the Goyt and have been going there usually once or twice a week for years.
It took 40 minutes to get the ambulance (including the air ambulance) to our aid and with the help of Buxton mountain rescue team Terry was safely put aboard the helicopter. Seven minutes later he was at Wythenshaw – less than 30 minutes later he had 2 stents inserted in his heart and by the time myself, son and daughter arrived he was going back on the coronary care ward and in his own words he’d been ‘sorted’.
Terry was discharged on Monday 18 July and is now well on the way to a full recovery. He feels deeply grateful to everyone who attended to him during his heart attack. Mountain rescue teams are something we have always supported as we are about walking in the Peaks and Dales. We’ve now seen at first hand the wonderful work they do. Thank you once again.
