Buxton Rambling Club in a Stew

Buxton rambling club

We walk the peaks and dales

Members of Buxton Rambling Club meet every weekend and most Wednesdays for walks in the Peak District at various distances and levels of ability.  Each year in October the members hold a Hot Pot Supper at St Ann’s Church Hall in Buxton and invite a guest speaker.   This year, on seeing the Buxton Well’s Dressings in July, the club decided to invite Buxton Mountain Rescue Team and hear more about the team’s Golden Anniversary.

Team member, Roger Bennett, went along on Saturday evening and following a delicious hot-pot presented a slide show entitled, “The History of Mountain Rescue in the Peak District”.    Roger explained how rambling became fashionable in the late 19th century and then exploded in to a popular pass-time in the early 1900s.  Accidents were bound to start happening but there was little organised assistance then available.   The Peak District has played a major part in the development of mountain rescue nationally and the very beginnings of the service can be traced to the region.

The presentation was well received by the Rambling Club which had early run a a raffle and run a book sale.  The proceeds of the night totaling £252 were presented to the rescue team to help with its Golden Anniversary Appeal to replace an aging vehicle.
