An Icy Challenge To Get Warm About

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team member, Edward Dalton, took part in the Scottish Ice Climbing competition at the Ice Factor, Kinlochleven, near Fort William last weekend (1–3 November), partly to raise funds for the team.

Edward wore a BMRT t-shirt throughout the competition, which was filmed by BBC Scotland. Many famous ice climbers also took part: Andy Turner, Kev Shields, and Simon Yearsley, among them. Ed grabbed the opportunity to ask them to sign his T shirt – which they obligingly did. Ed plans to sell the now autographed t-shirt and donate all the proceeds to the team. Details about this will be posted on our website in due course.

As for the competition, Ed went through to the finals. He came second in his class, and third overall. He was obviously delighted, declaring “This was my first competition, and I didn’t expect it to end this way”. That said, Ed is an experienced climber, having been involved in the sport for over 30 years. He also trained regularly for a good six months in the lead up to the event, both in the Peak Disctrict (Masson Lees, Matlock) and the Lake District.

A team spokesperson said “This was a remarkable achievement for Ed, and we are truly grateful to him for raising funds for the team in this unique manner.”
