The persistent low cloud and damp weather over the weekend no doubt contributed to some of the weekend’s incidents but a lack of preparation and respect for our hills was also evident in at least one call-out.

Team members are outdoor people themselves and will always turn out with a smile whatever the weather, whatever the incident. However, it can be a little frustrating when the call-out could have been avoided with the application of just a little common sense.

It’s an old chestnut and a plea that has been voiced since rescue teams were invented. PLEASE treat our hills and dales with respect. Hills are not dangerous, they just need to be used with care and attention. Map, compass (and know how to use them!) torch, whistle, spare clothing and a little extra food and water. A few minutes preparation can save hundreds of team members’ hours in searching.

Winge over! Roger Bennett, Team Chairman.

At 09.15 am on Saturday 18th May Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was called along with neighbouring teams, Kinder MRT and Edale MRT to search for a man who had been reported lost on Kinder Scout overnight. The man was known to have spent a very wet and cold night on the hillside and was believed to be suffering from hypothermia.

Thick low cloud blanketed the moor making navigation and visual searching very difficult. Dogs from the Search and Rescue Dog Association were also called and search teams commenced work from three different access points.

After an hour and half of searching the 41 year old male was located by members of Kinder MRT near to Edale Rocks and escorted to Hayfield.

Free fun for all the family! Wriggle through a mock cave, climb on board a fire engine, explore the Smoke House Tent.

This great day out is a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of the work of the Police, Ambulance, Fire, and Rescue Services. The day also showcases other organisations that work in partnership with the emergency services in the Peak District and High Peak including:

Mountain Rescue

Cave Rescue

Search and Rescue Dogs Association

Air Ambulance

Community First Responders

Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Service

Community Save A Life

Neighbourhood Watch

The Peak National Park Authority, and more…

There will be static displays by each of the emergency services where you can ask questions, pick up information, tips and advice, or take a look at their specialist equipment and vehicles. Throughout the day there will be arena displays, with a simulated road traffic accident, and a fire call.

There’s plenty of fun for the children, plus quizzes with instant prizes, face painting and more besides.

Bringing a little “glamour” to the day will be a marching display performed by Buxton’s “splendidly” uniformed and “immaculately” drilled troupe, the Billerettes.

The team was assembling at Upper Booth for a training exercise on Saturday evening when information was received about an incident in Crowden Brook.

A 16 year old female member of a visiting Army Cadet Unit from Melton Mowbray, undertaking a Duke of Edinburgh Award practice expedition, had sustained a suspected pelvic injury whilst descending from Crowden Tower. The teams’ training exercise was immediately aborted, and a call-out initiated instead. Team members were quickly on scene and were able to stabilise the casualty’s condition. However, due to the nature of the injury and the difficult ground conditions, a call for an RAF Seaking helicopter was made. Advice was also sought from a doctor member of our neighbouring Edale MRT. During the time taken for the helicopter to travel to scene from its base in Leconfield, Yorkshire, a foot evacuation continued. Darkness had fallen by the time the aircraft arrived, but the final stretcher winch into the helicopter was straightforward

The casualty was flown to a Sheffield hospital for further assessment.
