Buxton Mountain Rescue Team together with the East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to Windgather Rocks, near Kettleshume on Wednesday afternoon.

The casualty, a 21 year old male from the Northhants area, had been leading a climb known as “Face Route1” in the Buttress One area of the crag. He came off, his protection failed and he fell about 20 feet to the ground, sustaining pelvic, shoulder and back injuries.

He was treated on site by the ambulance crew and team personnel, including splinting and pain relief. He was then placed on a vacuum mattress, and carried to the roadside on a stretcher. Once transferred into the waiting land ambulance, he was taken to Macclesfield General Hospital for further treatment.

A team spokesman said “ This young man is a student living locally. He was wearing a helmet, without which his injuries may have been much more serious.”

A Buxton Team member was walking the Monsal Trail with his family on Sunday when they came across an injured cyclist. The incident was reported and Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was called to assist the ambulance service.

A 40 year old female from Sheffield was cycling along the trail near Bakewell, when a walker stepped out in front of her. The cyclist swerved to avoid the walker and came off her bike, sustaining serious injuries to both arms. She was treated on site by ambulance service paramedics and evacuated on our specialist stretcher a few hundred metres to Bakewell Station.

The casualty was transferred into the land ambulance and taken to Chesterfield Royal Hospital for further treatment.

A Buxton and Edale snatch squad was called to Speedwell Cavern, Castleton.

A 12 year old boy from Salford, part of a larger group of young people and a leader, were on the steep sided Winnats Pass when he sustained a suspected fracture/dislocation of his ankle.

Team members located the group about 130 feet up the very steep, wet, slippery slope of the pass. The ambulance service paramedics treated the casualty on site. Meanwhile, the other youngsters in the group were becoming increasingly anxious and restless. It was raining heavily, the hillside was becoming increasingly slippery, loose rocks were being dislodged and flying down the hillside when the young people moved.

A senior team member went up to the incident site and calmed the group down and began to escort them down the hillside, one at a time to the roadside. As further personnel arrived this process continued until they were all down and safe.

The casualty was loaded onto a mountain rescue stretcher, initially carried further uphill to avoid the loose rocks. The stretcher was then sledged and lowered using back ropes as support to the roadside. The casualty was transferred into the land ambulance and taken to the Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, for further treatment.

In all we recovered 21 people from the steep and treacherous hillside of the Winnats Pass during this incident.

Whilst fundraising in Buxton on Bank Holiday Monday, the team was called to recover a dog which had jumped over a bridge wall on the Monsal Trail near to the Rusher Cutting.

The dog had fallen some 30 metres into Chee Dale and was lying injured on a ledge. Whilst en-route we were informed the dog had succumbed to its injuries and passed away.

Two climbers had recovered the dog to the Monsal Trail by the time we arrived, leaving us to transport the dog and its owners to their car at Wye Dale for onward journey home.

The team was called to assist the West Midlands Ambulance Service with a fallen climber at the Roaches, near Leek. The initial report indicated the climber had not fallen to the bottom of the crag but was hanging about half way down.

On our arrival we located the climber, a 24 year old male from the Norwich area, visiting the Peak District over the Bank Holiday weekend. We believe he was the lead climber on a route known as “Amaranth”, who fell about 10 metres, hitting the cliff wall on his way down after part of his protection failed. He suffered back and facial injuries and was treated on site by the ambulance service paramedics. Team members evacuated him on a spinal board to the waiting Midlands Air Ambulance which had landed some 250 metres away. The man was then flown to the University Hospital, North Staffs., for further treatment.

Neil Carruthers, Buxton Team Leader said “This climber was wearing a helmet which undoubtedly saved him from further head injuries”.

Unbelieveably, he turned up whilst we were fundraising in Buxton on Bank Holiday Monday to thank the team personally. Luckily his injuries were not as serious as first thought.

The idea originated when Mrs Moffatt’s friend was rescued by Buxton MRT in Monsal Dale last August (see incident 45/2011). when she slipped and broke a wrist.

The competition winners were 9 year old Jacob and 9 year old Alyssia and their pictures will be used to tempt more people into joining Buxton MRT throughout the year.

The team sends a big “Thank You” to all the class for their help and enthusiasm.

For the last 6 years Buxton Mountain Rescue Team have been providing help and support to Wilmslow Running Club with an annual fell race in the Goyt Valley. It is usually without incident.

This year, 22 members attended the race control at Errwood Sailing Club and manned the 10 marshalling points on this years course around Fernilee Reservoir and Taxal areas. The race covers 10 kilometres along tracks and paths. Nearly 200 runners were taking part in this event.

Part way through the event a runner became injured. He was a 42 year old male from Kirmincham, Congleton. We understand a recurring knee injury, leading to a dislocation of the knee cap occurred on the route at the north west corner of Fernilee Reservoir. The runner was immobilised and in severe pain. His companions stayed with him whilst we were notified. Torrential rain and cool winds impacted on all 3 runners and they were becoming very cold.

Team members, including a doctor together with a medical professional were on scene very quickly, providing first aid including pain relief, splinting and bandaging. We also provided additional warm and dry clothing together with a box tent. A team ambulance was sent to the scene and all 3 runners were recovered to the race control. The casualty declined hospital treatment, preferring to be driven home by car. He was however advised to attend his local hospital as soon as possible.

After a great many years service the team’s information panels, which accompany us at fund raising events to help explain the work we do, needed refreshing. Producing something new is always more effort than you imagine, but one doughty team member volunteered to take on the challenge.

Luckily help was at hand in the form of Pete Dell from Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation, one of our neighbours in the joint Emergency Services premises in Buxton. Pete happens to own his own printing business Matlock Media, and he very kindly offered to make our new designs into two excellent quality, pull up banner displays, without charge.

Thanks a million, Pete! We think you did a splendid job. You can all judge for yourselves, of course, as we shall be using them at future public events. We hope you will enjoy seeing them.

If you wish to contact Pete, he’s easy to find

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team were called to Barber Booth, near Edale, following reports of an injured walker at Pagoda Rocks, on Kinders Southern Edges.

We knew the casualty was a female who had sustained a lower leg injury. As team members were arriving at the car park, we were made aware that our neighbouring team, Kinder MRT were undertaking some training on Kinder Scout. We contacted them and asked if they would be available to deal with this incident as they were already in the area. They agreed and Buxton MRT were stood down.

Everyone loves a SeaKing, don’t they? Distinctive, powerful, noisy, and very, very capable.

We don’t see as much of them in the Peak District these days (the various air ambulance services are a more common sight), so it’s a treat to get the chance to see them up close, and do a little training with the highly skilled crew at RAF Leconfield in East Yorkshire.

After some orientation and safety instruction, delivered inside the helicopter stationed in a hangar, we transferred ourselves back to the Ops room where we were briefed by the crew about the exercise. Back outside, we hauled ourselves and rucksacks onto the big yellow bird now with its engine and rotors going.

A short trip later, we returned to the airfield for the experience of being winched off whilst the helicopter hovered above ground.

We are extremely grateful to RAF Leconfield for hosting this training, and extend our immense thanks for the time and interaction with the crew on the day – particularly as they had just returned from a sea rescue incident.

Knowing that SAR SeaKing service at Leconfield will cease operating in a couple of years lent extra value to the event: training of this kind is invaluable, but sadly may become even rarer in future.
