Three Mountain Rescue Teams involved in a lengthy night-time search for a missing person participating in the Bullock Smithy Challenge, a 24hr long distance walk covering 56 miles of the Peak District.

The missing person, a 50 year old male from Hazel Grove, made the Edale Cross checkpoint at 17:30 but failed to make the next one in Edale village. Well into the evening he was reported as overdue and this triggered a search for Buxton team, later supported by both Edale and Kinder. Just before dawn the next day, the missing person turned up where mountain rescue vehicles were waiting for search sections to come off the hill. He was tired but uninjured.

The Bullock Smithy Challenge has been running since 1976 and is known as ‘a heck of a long walk in the Peak District’. It follows a route from Hazel Grove, and includes Chinley Churn, Kinder Scout, Mam Tor and Brand Top, near Buxton. Although the weather was dry and stable in the early evening, as the night wore on, low cloud and wind was present at higher levels.

The casualty, a 59 year old woman who lives nearby, was out walking in fine weather with friends, when she slipped on steep grassy slopes and injured the base of her spine. After being treated on scene, the Mountain Rescue Teams carried her on a short but tricky stretcher transfer to a playing field where an air ambulance was waiting. She was thence transported to a hospital in Chesterfield for further treatment.

A call from East Midlands Ambulance Service following the report of an eighty year old woman having fallen and sustained a shoulder injury. Early information regarding the location of the incident was very vague and was reported to be ” – on a footpath between Bakewell and Calton Farm!”

The joint Edale and Buxton MRT’s Snatch Squad was placed on standby until a better location was determined. The incident transpired to have occurred near New Piece Woods on the hillside above Calton Lees Garden Centre on the Chatsworth Estate. Shortly after the Snatch Squad was redirected to the incident a call from E.M.A.S. stood the teams down before arrival at the rendezvous. It is presumed the casualty was evacuated by air-ambulance. No other details known.

The missing person, a 42 year old man from Dronfield, had not been seen since 19 August and police were concerned for his safety. Away from the footpaths much of the ground is covered by extremely dense undergrowth and was very difficult to search.

Buxton Mountain Rescue team called to assist police with a search for a
missing person in the Goyt Valley.

The missing person, a 56 year old woman from Buxton, was reported missing
from 18:30 on Sunday evening. Police located her vehicle in a car park
near the Fernilee and Errwood reservoirs, a favourite walking area of hers,
but were concerned for her well being. This is a terrain of moorland, steep
sided woods, streams and large expanses of water.

After an aerial search by police helicopters and local officers failed to
locate the missing person, search dogs, and mountain rescue teams from Buxton
and Kinder were called in to search the immediate area.

The initial search of likely routes and local points of interest did not
locate the missing person. At first light, further support was called in
from Glossop, Derby and Woodhead teams. A more detailed search radiating from the
car park commenced. This proved to be a successful strategy when the
missing woman was found at 20:45 alive by one of the sections from
Woodhead team who had abandoned scheduled training to
assist with the search.

After treatment on site by mountain rescue doctors, the casualty was
evacuated by stretcher and taken to hospital for further treatment where her
condition was described as serious.
