Incident report

On Tuesday 27th March, the Kinder search plan was activated for a walker missing overnight on Kinder Scout in wet and foggy conditions. The overdue walker’s car was located by Derbyshire Police in Edale, however without any knowledge of the walker’s intended route, Buxton, Edale, Glossop and Kinder Teams were mobilised to search the whole of Kinder Scout. The Peak District  Search and Rescue Dogs were also called out.

After repeated attempts to contact the walker by mobile phone, the search controller was able to obtain the walker’s location using SARLOC, a specialist software app that can interrogate a missing person’s mobile phone and obtain an Ordnance Survey grid reference. Once located, members of Buxton and Edale Teams were able to climb up to his location on the southern edge path of Kinder Scout between Upper Tor and Nether Tor on the eastern side of Grindsbrook in Edale. The walker was cold, tired and wet but was able to walk off with assistance. Three and a half hours after the initial call, the teams were stood down.
