Incident report

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team called to rendezvous at White Lodge car-park near the Ashford in the Water following a report to EastShacklow woods Oct 2014_2 Midlands Ambulance Service of man having collapsed with a potential heart problem.   The man had been walking with family in Great Shacklow Woods when the problem occurred.    Given the serious nature of the call, Edale Mountain Rescue Team was also called to ensure a fast response with sufficient members.

Treatment on scene was by E.M.A.S. paramedics before the casualty, a 64 year old man from Sheffield, was placed on a rescue stretcher and carried through the woods to where the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air-ambulance had been able to land.  The man was then flown to a Derby hospital for further examination.

The emergency services are grateful to two ladies who were dog walking in the woods and who initially called 999 after hearing calls for help.  The ladies also gave very generous assistance by providing transport to hospital for the casualty’s wife.

I was the 64 year old man who was rescued by yourselves and Edale Mountain rescue team following chest pains whilst out walking. My wife and I are regular walkers and had walked for about 5 miles before I started to feel some discomfort in my chest. I have never had any signs of heart problems before, although there is family history. I collapsed in my wifes arms and she helped me to lie down. The two young ladies who were nearby not only called 999 but stayed with my wife and I the whole time helping and comforting my wife, one of them going down to the road to direct the ambulance. They then took my wife to Derby Royal Infirmary, even offering to stay and give my wife a lift home afterwards. I was flown to DRI where I immediately had two stents fitted into a blocked cardiac artery. I stayed in hospital for 2 nights, my wife also being allowed to stay. I return to DRI in 6 weeks time for further stents to be inserted in another artery. I hope to be back to full fitness and out walking again next Spring.
I would like to thank Sue and Louise for their help and kindness shown to Helen and I. I would also like to thank the 3 paramedics, one of whom turned out on his day off, the Air Ambulance crew and especially the 30-plus Mountain Rescue Volunteers who got me off a slippy hillside path.
