Incident report

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was called to the Roaches, near Leek last Sunday afternoon. A 21 year old male climber from the Northamptonshire area was leading a route. As he placed his third piece of protection, he fell. It appears his protection failed as he fell and he hit the ground.

Despite wearing a helmet he sustained serious head and neck injuries. He was treated on site by the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance doctor, evacuated by stretcher with the help of local climbers and team members and flown to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire for further treatment.

Big thanks to the MRT and others that brought my son, Stevie, off the roaches on Sunday 27th May. He will be home soon. Injuries are fractures to base of skull, stable fracture to L5 lumbar vertebra and multiple bruises. Fortunately NO C spine damage.

All indications now are that although his protection came out of the crag it did manage to slow down the effects of gravity.
