Incident report

On Sunday morning, Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was called away from the High Peak Emergency Services show in Buxton to assist Edale Mountain Rescue Team at an incident on Longstone Edge, near Bakewell.

The incident involved a 47 year old male from Sheffield, an experienced mountain biker, riding on Longstone Edge with a group of friends. Apparently he braked to avoid an oncomimg vehicle and went over the handlbars, hitting the hard surface track.

Despite wearing a helmet he sustained serious head injuries. He was treated on site by doctors and paramedics from two air ambulances, which had landed nearby. Medical intervention was required on site, and the casualty was flown to the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, for further treatment.

Neil Carruthers, Buxton Team Leader said: “This gentleman was badly injured. We worked with the East Midlands Ambulance Service, medical crews from the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance, and the Notts and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance, to stabilise him and get him to hospital care as soon as possible”.

    Hi all,
A great big thankyou. It was me you helped, after a long recovery and significant time in hospital, I’m doing much better. I broke my neck as well as suffering the head injury (the same bone they try to break when they hang you!). I woke up in the Hallamshire about 6 weeks later. I’m now planning to return to work in January and guess what, I’ve been out on my bike again!! Very sedately though, I sent a donation through to the team – your work is fab and needs support.

I more than likely wouldn’t have made items or would have suffered permanent physical and mental disabilities without the prompt and brilliant support you gave. A huge thank you from me, my son Will and my girlfriend Sarah. Also from my riding buddies who were eloped and supported by your prompt response. I am aware you meet on a Thursday (I think) and will try and get up to say thank you in person.
