Incident report

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team alerted by Derbyshire police following a 999 call from a manCrowden brook call-out aug 2015 reporting himself lost on Kinder Scout.

The 18 year old student from London, staying locally in the Peak for a few days, had been for a walk on to Kinder Scout from Grindlslow Knoll.  Using a local walks guide leaflet for navigation he made his way along the southern edge of the plateau before becoming disorientated around the Woolpacks area.  After several attempts to locate himself he eventually called for assistance.

Initially, the man believed himself to be on Jacobs Ladder but following telephone conversations with search leaders, the rescue team thought him more likely to be located under Crowden Towers. Three search sections of the team deployed from Upper Booth and Edale whilst a Search and Rescue Dog Association handler combed the edge path westwards.

When team members approached the top of Crowden Brook the casualty’s whistle could be clearly heard.  After a few minutes the casualty was being escorted off the hill and eventually back to Edale.

Moral to this incident; Map, compass, torch and whistle every trip.
