Incident report

A joint Buxton Edale snatch squad was called to Woodseats Farm, Castleton, in the Hope Valley on Saturday afternoon. We were tasked to assist the East Midlands Ambulance Service in recovering an injured mountain biker from the Hollins Cross area, which is part of the Great Ridge between Mam Tor and Back Tor.

On arrival we located a 43 year old male from Woking, Surrey. He was descending the hillside track from Hollins Cross when the accident occurred, sustaining chest injuries. The man was treated on site by ambulance service paramedics, and then evacuated by mountain rescue team members on a stretcher to the waiting ambulance, some 300 metres away. The ambulance took the casualty to Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, for further treatment.

I am the MTB rider involved in this incident. Just wanted to say thank you very much for coming out to help me on Saturday. I sustained a partial collapse of my left lung as a result of the fall which explains my breathing difficulties. To find yourself in a remote and unfamiliar location with a serious medical complaint is a frightening experience and your professionalism provided much needed reassurance. Also glad that I was wearing my MTB helmet and riding within a group. The staff at Stockport hospital looked after me very well, aspirated my chest and after an overnight stay I am back home in Surrey for follow-up treatment locally. I am already looking forward to my next trip back to the Peak District. What a lovely place. Next time I might attach stabilisers to the bike though!

    Thank you.
