Incident report

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team called along with Edale M.R.T. following the Grindsbrook AA 1report of three casualties in the upper parts of Grindbrook.  Initial information was sketchy but, with the thoughts of three stretcher evacuations from one of the most difficult areas of Kinder, a Coastguard S-92 helicopter was also alerted.

A total of thirty-five rescuers responded to the call and three independent sets of rescue equipment were dispatched up Grindsbrook fromGrindsbrook AA 3 Edale.  At the same time as team members were arriving at the incident scene the Bristows S-92 helicopter was appearing overhead.  Following a speedy casualty triage assessment all three were would be evacuated by the aircraft and each was carried by stretcher to where the helicopter had been able to make a brief GRindsbrook AA 2landing.  The aircraft then flew back to Edale village and the three fifteen year old girls were reassessed in the tranquillity of a East Midlands ambulance.

The group of young people, all from Grimsby, were staying at Edale Y.H.A. and had been out on a guided walk of Kinder Scout as part of the National Citizens Service programme.  As the group was progressing up Grindsbrook, one females aggravated an existing knee injury.  Despite attempting to continue she was unable to safely make her way back down to Edale village.  Shortly after, two more group members, who both had pre-existing medical conditions, exacerbated their problems which meant they too were unable to complete the walk safely.

Two of the three were later taken by ambulance to Sheffield Children’s Hospital for further assessment.
